Re-marking caliber on a barrel?

What is the best way to remark a barrel that has been rechambered that a non gunsmith can do?

 I bought a set of number and letter stamps some years back. I just stamp an inconspicuous spot. (Like the lug on the bottom of the barrel.) So if my "line" isn't straight it isn't immediately noticeable. But the caliber designation is at least on the barrel.

 I am rechambering a 45 Colt barrel to 454 Casull very soon. It some what matched the H&R font so I think I may add a "4" to the 45 and it will read 454 Colt. ;D

CW  What will you use for a hammer or whatever and will it have to be re-blued?

 I use a machenists ball peen hammer. A strong arm helps.  ;D

 I haven't needed to reblue, any.

Just wondering, do you strike through the old caliber marking so there's no mistaking it for current caliber?

When Wayne did my 2 barrels, he put the new caliber on the top of the barrel so it shows just in front of the scope rail.  He did not hit it with blueing.  DP

  I have seen this done and feel it looks trashy. Another idea I have seen is to flat stamp it out (peen over) and re-stamp over it. But getting that to look good also takes a "touch".

 For me, this time, adding the "4" to the end of the "45" keeps it clean and factory looking yet says its not the factroy caliber... Also for this one you can still safely fire any 45 Colt round anyway.

I like to take the letter  X   and stamp over the old caliber and then stamp the new caliber in front or under the old calober.  That way I can see the new caliber size where the original was stamped, also If someone else had my barrel they would look at the normal position to check caliber.

Midway and Brownells both have name/number stamp kits and also a jig to hold the stamps in a line and also on the barrel...fairly simple to make...most tooling catalogs have cheap stamp kits also...KBC, ENCO, MSD, J&L etc.

Most any trophy engraving shop will also do it if you take the shooter apart...(maybe not in the Gulag of Kalifornication).

You should XXX out or remove the original caliber designation and position the new info so there is no question as to the caliber for safety sake.

Lightly file the old numbers off with a swiss needle file have a trophy shop engrave the new  numbers then touch up with cold blue.
