Load Tables for Dom Pop Can Dictator
« on: February 18, 2009, 01:58:29 AM »
Has anyone built load tables for the Dom pop can dictator.

I need a 100 yard starting load for a cement filled diet Pepsi can

Might not be much help, but with a 3/4 full can of plaster of paris and 150 grains of FFG @ 45 degrees, I got ~200 yds.

Same load at ~20 degrees elevation put it out to ~150 yds.

I didn't use a diet Pepsi can though; mine was regular Mountain Dew.

I would appreciate the same information although mine are more likely to be diet coke cans.  By the way, how do you get the top of the can open enough to fill it with cement mix?  I have crunched the whole can on the two or three I tried to open.

In the past I used a funnel to just pour the cement in the pull tab hole. But if there were problems in the 25 years since the last time pour I have forgot them.  I'll make a separate post on how that aspect of this project goes.  I am also building powder funnels, bore swabs and linstocks right now.

When I was shooting 12 oz. pop cans (diet 7up) out of my mortar; I was using 150gr. of 2fg and was getting 175 yds in distance.
Now that I'm using the 3" olive cans I'm only using 105gr. of 2fg and getting the same distance.
Don't forget that they make a 6oz. soda can in various flavors if you want to reduce your charge.
When I was using the soda cans I used a pair of tin snippers and cut the top and pushed the pieces down into the can and then
poured the qwik-crete mix into the can. If you want to attach a streamer to the can; push a snippet of wire into the mix. The wire
can also be used if you have to retrieve a can and the mortar is too heavy to tip forward.
When you're walking on eggs; don't hop!!

Standard military issue can opener. I believe it is a p38 . They work fast and clean. Opened untold quantities over 30 years with the same one.No dented cans ., and they are wide open.

Good move.  I've torn off lots of aluminum from the cement contents with today's cans.

Opens up like a daisy - about 20 - 30 feet out of the bore.

I never lost a can to peeling.  I always poured through pull top hole and left the can intact.

Depends on both the powder charge and the concrete used.  Too much powder and ordinary redi-mix and all I get is a cloud of cement dust, some aluminum fragments and a big boom.
