Stupid, Stupid, Stupid!!!!
« on: February 21, 2009, 12:43:22 PM »
Rained here 2 days ago, nice clear windless day,
I think I will burn the weeds out of my garden spot
before I till it up. I now have no hair on my left arm.
no hair in my nose. my left hand and face now look like
I have a severe sunburn. the hair on the left side of my head
is shorter then the right. both legs are cut up from getting
tangled in barbed wire while fighting the ensuing brush fire.
coughing up smoke debris. Dang that was Stupid !
no wind at all until I lit the first tomato cage to burn
the dried up tomato plant up. Then the Gale came!
Took about 2 seconds to realize I had really screwed up!
I don't envy firefighters! those folks got some brass orb's (even the females)!
Nothing macho here, that tightened the sphincter when that fire went
up all around me.

Been there done that and it's always quite the experience the moment you realize it's about out of control and going places you desperately do NOT want it going. I've also had some big brush fires roaring when the wind shifted wrapping me in the flames. NOT FUN.

I have finally learned to make sure I have a wide area all around my fires cleared so there is nothing they can jump to. I even had one once that had been out for 2-3 days light back up  when the winds came up and boy did that one put us in high gear as it came the woods behind the house on fire and had I not got it under control really fast it would have left my land before anyone could possibily have gotten to it. Luckily I got lots of hose pipe.

Well look on the bright side of things. Now you wont have to shave or get a hair cut for awhile now. ;D
I wouldn't have ever told my story but I had something very simular happen along time ago. Sure is surprising how fast fire will spread.

I don't mind admitting when I do something stupid...
maybe it will keep someone else from doing it.
Always wet everything around what you intend to burn
before striking the first match! My toasted spots have stopped hurting
now at least, but my right leg sure hurts from being torn up
by barbed wire. That stuff really did a number on me.
Glad it was the old fashioned kind instead of concertina.

Yeah, we joke about fires a bunch, but one of the scariest things I've ever seen in my life was when our neighbors lit up some brush piles and it torched most of our 220 acres.  About 10:00 at night we went up in the woods.  Creepy, creepy... The fire was big enough that it was causing a pretty good breeze that rattled the trees underneith a sky that was lit up like daylight... Glad for our local vol. firefighters!  They did an outstanding job getting that monster under control.

But those woods were beautiful come that spring...

You and me must be neighbors or at least kin somehow.
You have a plan and it seems fool proof, then I realize I am the fool that made the plan as I try gacefully too back out stage left.  :'( :-[ :P :-*

We have the burn nazi's here.  Got to pay for a permit and then call the air pollution control board, fire department and forest service to gain permission before burning.

Burn without a permit and you don't see a judge, but rather the director of the air pollution control board.

We're the constitution?  No judicial review?

The alphabet agencies have assumed powers by act of law, not by constitutional ammendment.

Hey William,
there was no backing out gracefully, My dumb idea had instant consequences that had to be dealt with.
Another five or ten minutes and I could have lost my house, barn and shop. not to mention several
cars. The grass is black all the the way to the back tire of our 1965 mustang. there is another 65 stang in the shop and a 1973 camaro. A 1967 ford and a 1967 chevy p-up (both short beds)are in the barn. 2 - 67 V.W. beetles. A 79 Camaro and a 71 gran torino. Thats why I got burned, I had a lot to loose...
