I recently purchased an officer's size Charles Daly in stainless. Pretty rough inside, finish is pretty good for a gun in this price range. function has been flawless for the first 100 rds. Accuracy is on par with other officers size 1911s including the Ultra Carry. I'm ok with it so far. It won't replace my Kimber, but for under $400 bucks!! It'll make a hell of a car gun. Anyone on this forum have any recent experience with these guns, good or bad?

Guys,
Am I to assume that I am the only one on this forum who purchased a CD? Or am I the only one to admit it?

i have had a full size charles daly for over a year.I had some breakin problems with fed hydro shock ammo but after about 300 rnds even they work. I probably will never own a kimber but I will own another charles daly. It may not have the status of some but I can't shoot status. Good luck
Mike

Mikepow,

I have another 50 or so lead reloads through the CD at this point. I have yet to have a malfunction of any kind. I like the size of the Officers model but wish CD offered a lightweight model. This one's a load! I've got it in a holster attached to my Second Chance vest and it's starting to wear on me after a 10 hr shift. I think I got my money's worth. Only time will tell!

hello savage,  i too own cd commander.  i have put around 5000 rounds through it and it still works fine.  however, i had to polish some of the sharp edges for it to fit my taste...overall, it is well worth its price.  congratulations on your cd... 8)

Savage,
I have this gun also.  I got mine about three years ago, so it's one of the early officer's models.  To put it mildly, mine had problems.  The culprit was a bad recoil assembly.  I sent it back to KBI with no results.  I replaced the factory recoil guide rod setup with a one-piece guide rod with a single 22 pound spring.  After throating/polishing and a trigger job, this thing now shoots.  It feels good in the hand, and I'm happy with the performance now.  Good luck.

I have a full size model that I've put several hundred rounds through.

It functions fine, I've had no stoppages.

Accuracy is mediocre, probably due to the fact that the barrel looks like it was rifled with a dull file, very crude machining on the bore.

Trigger was pretty horrid, took it apart and surprise surpise... there were no machined surfaces on the trigger or sear or disconnector.  These parts are castings and other than the hammer hoods they hadn't even taken a file to them!  Anyway, I re-cut all the angles and stoned the hammer and sear.  Trigger is fine now, but it was several hours work.

For what I have in the gun, it's "okay".

It's by no means a quality firearm, but for a truck "beater" gun it's fine.

My CD officers mdl was almost impossible to disassemble the first time due to excess material on the link pin support. Once I got it apart I took a dremel to it and made enough clearance for the guide rod to be taken out, now it disassembles like it should. You might try lapping that rough bore to improve accuracy. I'm ok with the accuracy of mine for what it is.

It'd take a year of lapping to do this bore any good and by then you'd have lapped the lands flat...

Lapping "works" for barrels that are already pretty much smooth.

I have a couple dozen 1911's as it is, this one will likely not be around long enough to justify any further expense or time.  I've got $250 in it and a couple hours doing the trigger work...

I'll probably tote it in the truck until the next gunshow.

I've had no problem getting $350-$375 out of these used.

This one is a two tone with the stainless frame/blue slide.

I hear ya! This one will not replace my Kimbers. I bought this one to keep in the back of my patrol unit as an extra, or even primary on call outs. It's a good back up to my deep concealment guns. I got pretty much what I paid for.

:D I had an early commander size two-tone. Was pretty but could not get it to feed. They may have improved their quality control some since then. I have a Kimber Pro-Carry CDP. Havn't had a chance to shoot it much and will not carry it until it is broken in. It's one beautiful 1911 and seems to want to shoot. I think I may have found my keeper 1911! :-D
