Another newbie question: chokes

Bear with me guys, it has been a long time since I have been around firearms (40 years), and there is much that I don't know. 

Here's another question:  I recently bought a Baikal 22 mag/20 gauge combo gun that does not appear to be threaded for chokes. Can I shoot slugs or buckshot from the shotgun barrel?  Should I get the gun adapted for chokes? 

When I was a teenager, to the best of my knowledge there weren't such things as chokes, at least as far as we knew.  We always had to adapt our hunting to the gun, and not the gun to the hunting.

Wildbuc. The shotgun barrel probably is choked. Just not with the newer removable chokes. In a fixed choke barrel it is usually stamped on the barrel someplace or a gunsmith can measure the choke. You can shoot slugs through the barrel but the choke may not be the best for your slugs. In a smothbore barrel use foster or Brenneke slugs not Sabos. Regards

there should be a few letters stamped on the barrel (like IM, M, F ) where you load the shotgun shell.  What does the letter(s) say?

Doug,  On the bottom of the chamber area there is an M.  Directly beneath the chamber area, and on the left side there is:  15.7 M (0.5).

Are you  able to interpret that info? 


By the way, I have read on this site about Baikals being rough, heavy, and so on.  That's definitely not the case with my gun.  It is a well made beauty!

  M = Modified and you can shoot any buckshot or "foster style" slug through the bbl...  You really need to pattern the gun with different loads, to see what it will shoot to your satisfaction, and hopefully to the sights...

Thanks DM.  I have yet to fire the gun, so I'm eager to test it out fully.  On this IZH-94 Sever, the barrels are joined together for most of their length, so I don't see how they can adjusted.  Hopefully, points of aim will be close, or close enough.
