12ga. legal pistol?

I've seen on here where some folks have shotguns with barrels less than 18".
Now what I'm asking is, what hoops will I have to jump through for the ATF. and how much will it cost me to turn a double barrel shotgun into a "legal"12" barreled pistol?

Ask the ATF, I believe it's possible in some places but may not be worth it.

Shotguns with a barrel length less than 18" are a class 3 weapon.
As such they fall under the same taxation and permitting as fully automatic weapons.

I often wonder what kind of a market there is for a SXS pistol in calibers like 500 S&W, 475 Linbough / 480 Ruger, 45-70, or 460/454/ 45colt, 444 marlin and 44 Mag/44 spl.  based on a 410 or 28 ga frame guns in 10 to 12" barrels.
On that note.
My friend has a Steven 311 Riot model with the 18.25" barrels.  It came with a standard stock.
He found an old stock and cut it down filed and sanded it so it was exactly 27" and legal.
I shot it and you really could not hit any thing past 10 feet.  The lever tended to bite you and recoil was such that fast second shot was impossible.
With the full stock it was a great little shotgun that could put slugs or shot out to 50 yards easily.  Fast second shots were not easy but acurate.
