Let me guess....I bet it was...a...REMINGTON??
The problem with troubleshooting is....sometimes it shoots back!

Not an owner of a Remington.  I would go with a Weatherby Vanguard Compact model.  It comes with a second, adult sized stock that can be swiched when your son gets older.  Guaranteed to shoot 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards.  Has a 20" barrel.  Scope it with a Leopold 2x7 Rifleman scope or a Leopold M8 4x.
I gotta second this one, since it's exactly what I'm getting my son for Christmas - except in 7mm08.   :)

Ray, If I didn't know better I would say that you are messing with jvs in a real bad way. M700, what a hint.
good luck , DM

OK, Here's a follow-up on this Christmas rifle.

My son was setting-up to shoot a HP silhouette match "fun" shoot at the range and shot these groups.
Here's his 3 shot group at 200 yards:

And here's TWO - 2 shot groups at 300 yards - Difference is 4 chicks elevation and 2 horozontal:

The lines in the above pics are 1" apart.  Note: Their "fun" shoot is shot in yards not meters.

I own all three calibers in Rem 700 rifles.  All are good.  Probably the most versitle is the 270.

Oh, this was Christmas of 2006. Well, I voted today anyway. :D By the way, I picked the LTR too, Ray. ;) Good shooting!

Nice rig Ray. Nice shooting too. I just picked up that very same stock for my .223 SPS Tactical (there's that silly "tactical" word again). How do you like the stock? Mine feels excellent to hold, but I've yet to get to the range and try the darn thing.

I have the CDL in .30-06.  That's what I'd have bought for him.

Indeed Swamper, you have a fine rifle there. I've seen the pictures. But technically, your's is a SPS with a CDL stock. To be a true CDL, your's would have to have a Jeweled Bolt and a Satin blued finish on the barreled action. Do you think I'm nitpicking? ;)

Actually it's an ADL in a CDL stock.  I prefer it over the true CDL.
