My Handis are tools
« on: February 24, 2009, 02:48:05 AM »
Tim this is somewhat OT, feel free to move it if you should.

My Handis, primarily, as well as my other guns, are my every day working tools.  I think they almost weep when I choose one over another for a task at hand.  They put food on my table, enable memerable days in the field, control predators and pests, euthanize injured, sick or crippled livestock, and efficently and cleanly kill livestock for butchering.

Most city people don't understand this.  They see guns only as a weapon in the hands of a criminal.

We've got a major battle ahead of us, and we need to get the point across that rural folks NEED to keep their weapons and every law abiding citizen has that RIGHT no matter where he lives.

I'll climb down off my soapbox now.

Pete

P.S.  The range is closed today.  It's snowing so hard I can't see the 300 yard gong.  I had planned to see if the '06 liked 150s or 180s best and try the LEs in the .30-30.  Oh well, tomorrow is another day.

I agree completely.  I'm a country boy that is, unfortunately, living in the city.  Guns for me are purely recreational right now.  That I hope to change when my wife and I buy a little spread.
I do remember as a kid driving around the pastures with my grandad.  These was always on an old Western Auto single shot .410 under the seat of his pickup.  He didn't shoot recreationally. He didn't hunt.  It was there with his wire cutters, hammer, and a few pieces of bailing wire.  It was a tool for his ranch work.

Thanks Tim, I'm still trying to figure out what Handi tool I need next.  It might be a .308 Survivor. Then I'd swap stocks with the .357 synthetic Monte Carlo...don't need a recoil pad on that.  That will soon grow to a Maxi.  Still plottin' and plannin'  Thank God it's not a painful disease.....except for your wallet. ::)

Actually, if you were gonna have an addiction, Handi's ain't to rough on the wallet.  If I was buying Shiloh Sharps THAT would hurt my wallet.  And everytime I hear about these models with $500 a day herion addictions I think, "Dear god, thats a new Handi, brass, and reloading dies!"

And some "Handi" tools they are......
« Reply #5 on: February 26, 2009, 07:51:22 AM »
Hello from Georgia,

I have to agree that these guns are first and foremost "tools". They are objects used to accomplish a task at hand. Mine are all used in some capacity regularly. I do however have a few firearms that are considered heirlooms and will never again feel the fire. These are personal family treasures which by all means would still do the job, but with so many other "Handi" firearms in my safe, there is just no reason to use them any more. I feel fortunate to be able to have enough firearms that I do not need to add any more wear to them. Another thing that is cool about these Handi Rifles is the fact that there are so many choices of calibers and configurations of dressings that one can be had for each specific task. I like the Hornet and .223 for the smaller game like pests and varmints. The .243 and 25/06 work well for the small stuff all the way up to mid size targets, while the .308 and .30/06 are good for the big game. Then, there is the 45-70. Who really NEEDS one of these?.....................well, EVERYONE !!! This is an excellent varmint round. Not many coyotes will continue moving after a broadside shoulder shot from a hot loaded 405 gr. round, and antelope, deer, elk, moose, bears and bison will all react similiarly. The 45-70 is still kinda new to me, but after shooting mine for a few years now, I wish I had been turned on to them 25 years ago. All these guns are a utilitarian delight. Simple. Safe. Affordable. Accurate. Effective. All this leads up to the undeniable fact that these are some top quality tools. God Bless You.
Dave

P.S. My private 500 yard range never closes and it
is a very nice 71 degrees here in the Great State
of Georgia.

Dave, that 500 yard range at 71 degrees sounds wonderful.  Give me a minute to peel off my insulated coveralls and longjohns and I'll be right there.......with the .45-70. ;)

Greetings,

The proper pronunciation is Mack-bean. It is just south of Augusta about 10 miles. It is actually a community instead of a town. Richmond County and Augusta consolidated and absorbed several communities. The people here are all kinda private, yet ever willing to help. We prefer a quite lifestyle, except for all that shooting noise !!If you ever want to visit my range, let me know, and bring a BUNCH of ammo, as there is absolutely no limit on either number, or caliber. Although much over a .50 BMG may bring some unusual attention.God Bless !

Well shoot boy!   :o  You just a whoop, hop and a holler away!   ;D  You at one end of the Jawja portion of I-20 and I'm just off t'other!  I'm right between you and ol' GB!   :P

I can jump on my scoot and be in Augusta in just a couple and a half hours!  Did it just a few months ago for the annual party of my Club's Augusta Chapter.

A feller I went to flight school with and shared an apartment with when we were stationed at Hunter Army Airfield lives in Augusta also.  Nice place.  Don't know about Mack-Bean... :-\   ;)   ;D

All my guns are tools and my relaxation.  Nothing mellows me out like burning up a couple hundred rounds of ammo plinking.  Great way to get the kids out of the house and spend some time with them that they enjoy as much as I do.  DP
