500 S&W success
« on: February 26, 2009, 01:37:16 PM »
Thought ya'll might enjoy this.

I have had my 500 S&W barrel for a while now and never really got around to playing with it.
The past few days I have been messing around with it a bit.  This is a second hand barrel I bought here and finally fitted it properly yesterday.  I got a mold and Lee .501 sizer kit in a trade a few months ago and I bought the gaschecks for $15 at a gun show the weekend after I got the barrel, long before I picked up the mold because I knew I wouldnt be able to feed it jacketed bullets because of the price.

Using new Starline brass, Winchester Large Rifle primers, my own cast bullets, and Lil Gun Powder (very close to max) I was able to produce this group at 25 yards, off hand.  The "flyer" was my fault, but still the group is 1.25 center to center, if you take the pulled shot out of the group the remaining 4 measure .90 center to center.  Fluke right?  Wrong.  I was able to produce 10 shot groups with the same load at 25 yards off hand again roughly the same size, making a large hole in the paper.  I found that the recoil was much worse with the bullet seated to the crimp groove of the bullet and the accuracy wasnt the best about 2" at 25 yards.

I didnt take the chrono with me but I will next time I take it out.  Over the summer I shot some 440gr hard cast with a starting load of H110 and remember it being much higher than the max loads listed velocity.

I need to file down that front sight some more because the rear peep is topped out and the groups are still low.  Once I get point of aim at 25 yards I will back up the yardage to see how it does at longer ranges (75-100 yards), maybe out to 200 yards just to see, although I doubt I will ever use it on anything that bleeds past 50-75 yards.

Nice shooting!!

Was that bullet cast in the LEE mould? If so, I bought this mold too, but haven't cast any yet.. SOON though!!  I have had a standing date with my lead pot for two weeks now... The weather is not coperating!!! >:( >:(

My best, most consistant accuracy so far has been with a Ranger Ricks, 440WFNGC bullet and XMP 5744 powder. But it wasn't THAT GOOD!! I'm jealous!!! GOOD JOB!!!!!  :o ;)

Yep that was the LEE bullet mold.  A freind of mine has a 700gr mold I am going to see if I can borrow it for a couple week.  Not that I need a bullet that big but it might be fun to see what it will do.

Looks promising!!  ;) The 700gr Ranger Ricks shoot as good as anything else I've shot in the .500,  best group so far was with 29gr Lil'gun, velocity was 1430fps. Nothing spectacular, but it would make anything dead within 100yds!!

I'm still looking and saving for a Handi in 500 S&W to go with my S&W Model 500.
I wish I could score gas checks for $15, my last box at Midway ran close to $50 !!  I use the Lee 440 grain mold almost exclusively and have been very pleased with its results.  I use the Lee Sizer at .501 and Hornaday gas checks, Alox lube applied three times (once before sizing, twice afterwards) and have been pleased with the results.  Mostly used Tite Group powder.

I do warn you, though, I thought I could get by without gas checks by keeping the loads to minimum and the velocities low.  Well, after 4 shots the barrel looked llike it had been smeared with lead, took me several hours to work it all out with a Lewis Lead remover and the lead out cloth.  I have since shot hundreds of the same bullets but gas checked, still Alox lubed, at all kinds of velocities and never had a problem.  I suspect the Handi would be just as susceptible to leading as the revolver.

I also used some lighter bullets from Midway, Rainier 325 grain plated with mediocre results.  They are actually for a 50 AE and do not have a crimp cannelure and I've been told they are hard to crimp although I haven't had a problem with setback.  I just haven't found a load that they like or else the gun just doesn't like light bullets.  Seemed to do all right with the Hornaday 350 grain, though, just my wallet and my hand couldn't keep up with 'em !!!!!

For a plinker get a LEE Improved Mini Ball mold, I have one and cast with wheel weights.  Bullets come out at about 370gr, size them and lube them with Johnson Paste wax or LLA which ever you choose, I like JPW because it drys and isnt sticky.  Load them up with Trailboss and you have a 500 S&W a kid can shoot.

You can also shove 2 .490 round balls in the case no real use but its kinda fun to play with it.

The 440 grn Hardcast wfngc from LBT is supposedly tested to 3100 fps without any leading.  These are the only cast bullets I have now, and I'm still working on an accurate load for them.
