Blackpowder in 500 S&W?
« on: March 03, 2009, 03:05:14 AM »
As some of you know, I travel on large construction projects around the US and am not home too much.  But a dangerous thing happened (I got to thinking) and I remembered I purchased some bullets 440 grain plainbase lead bullets lubed with blackpowder lube, SPG I think.  I haven't been home to play with it but I am compiling info while on the road and wondered of any of you fine gentlemen can give me a starting place as far as blackpowder volumes and type and primers are concerned.  I am pretty set on my plinking up to elephants in the yard loads for the 500 S&W but I like the smoke and the smell sometimes. I have two 45-70s that are better suited to black powder but this 500 is my current interest.

I too have thought along this line.
Sort of a short 50/70cal BPCR.

500 case lenght 1.625
OAL 2.250

50/70 case lenght 1.720
OAL 2.191

Should be a lot of fun!

Put all the powder you can in the case and still seat the bullet. Compressed powder is the best.
 DON'T leave air space.

What about Pyrodex, Triple 7, or even Trail Boss? They might be fun and easier to clean up....<><....:)

I use the old CLEAR SHOT BP which is now PIONEER POWDER.

DON'T leave air space.

I know we are not to leave an air space when using BP yet they load the BP in the stick form in cartridges and MZs with no ill effects.
This has an air space all around it.
Why isn't this unsafe?
Always wondered about this!

Yep, I used the Clear shot or Clean shot whatever it is called.  Nearly filled the case and added a 50cal Lee REAL bullet that had been lubed with liquid alox.  That was a fun round.  Might have worked better if I had used a sizer on it.  It kind of has a tapered shape so I seated it long and forced the action closed.  If I seated it to a shorter COL it made the case too fat to chamber with thumb pressure.  It was a soft lead and worked well if I left it long and let it ride into the rifling when I chambered it.  I didn't chrony it, but it was fun to shoot.  Off hand at 25 yds and peep sight was good enough for pop cans.  I can't remember how much powder it would hold.  I might still have a case laying around to check, unless somebody beats me to it.
