Remington 700ml + BH @ the Farm
« on: February 26, 2009, 03:21:55 PM »
Well finally got out to do some shooting today.  Shooting just makes verything feel good - well at least until you look at the target - but it beats staying home....

Purpose of the trip was to try BH in the 700ml again.  Had a very good outing with it a while back - thought I would verify that I could actualy shoot BH from the gun.

Also I was going to try some different primers, Fed 209A's and Winchester W209's.  I also took along my CCI-209m's and a pack of Cheddites.   I had shot the Cheddites and the CCI's on the last trip to the farm.

Also last trip I shot .458/300 grain Sierra's in an MMP Orange sabot.  This trip I wanted to shoot a lighter bullet and verify that could be done....

Last evening I spent some time loading tubes for the trip.  I first used my volume measure and through 9 loads.  Then I weighed each of those loads. They all were a bit light.  They measured from 75.6 grains to 75.3 grains.  Then I measured 6 loads with the scales.  77 grains each to equal 110 grains by volume.  I really did not like the volume loads because when I went to cut the top of the load off I could feel some granuals getting broke or cut as I slid the cut funnel over the top.

Here is a pic of the my prep work...

OK - ready to go the this morningand wouldn't you know it... miserable wet snow....

When the snow quit early this afternoon - the warm 'Chinoock' winds moved in... but I was going shooting anyway.  The winds were blowing 10-15mph here in town so I know they were going to be really bad @ the farm - but I did not really care.

Got to the farm and setup my 'tailgate' work bench and the wind was bad...

Set the target at 50 yards and loaded up... Shots 1&2 looked real promising with the new W209's that i was trying.  Shot #3 thought I would try a Fed 209A - got a hang-fire of all things could not beleive it...  I switched primers again the CCI-209M's group looked good. and I was sold on the CCI's.

Moved the target to 100 yards but I changed the angle of the shot to reduce some of the effect of the winds - tried to get get where I was shooting more into the wind - did not get enough angle but it was a bit better.

Shot the rest the rest of my prepared tube and hand threw some additional shots.  Shot a decent group of 250 grain Gold Dots then decided to shoot some 200 XTP's - even decided to try a Fed 209A again and again - a hang-fire.  I can not explain the hang-fires with the 209A and yet the CCI and even the W209's were perfect.... just do not get it.

When I got home and started to clean the gun I got a surprise... The nipple while really dirty was not clogged at all.  Not a very good picture but the flash channel is sooty and the flash hole is wide open.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

You obviously got some bad primers. Actually very bad primers. Busta or UnderClock put up a post on MM,
that you should try and find with actual power/strength tests. The Winchester and CCI are weak in comparison to the Federal. Not sure about the CCI M. I love CCI primers but not with BH209. Light bullet/ loose fit has nothing to do with the mis-fire.

I do not have a good explanation... When I prepped the gun to get ready to shoot - I shoot 4 Federals at the ground to make sure the flash channel was clear of oil.  There was plenty of gas hitting the ground.  With the muzzle 2/3" off the gound it would move gravel on the ground.  I was second-guessing the hole thing by thinking or asking is the primer so strong that it over-powers the ability of the nipple to pass the gas and heat to the charge... What ever there was a definite hang-fire.

Also remember the 700 has a separtate nipple and BP - I have not measured the flash hole in the nipple but it does seem about the same as the Omega flash-hole.... Could it possibly be so powerful that it is pushing the load off the powder creating an air gap prior to the powder igniting... and since BH is a progressive burning powder with that air space it takes it a short time to fully ignite????

That strength chart is posted over on Toby's sight... i have seen it a lot...

Yooper

Good to here from ya.... my wife makes me share the 'MAN' room on occasions - I hate the sewing machine on my counter - but I am not going to make a fuss - that leads to other problems - I also have to clean up and pick up the 'Man' room when the grandkids come - they think it is the 'REC' room and often it becomes a wreck when you get 3 little girls playing in there - it takes me a day or two to recover even my coumputer... But, I love the kids to come and visit so again 'hush' is the word of the day...

later - mike

Mike, I been real busy this winter. Kares dad has cancer and isn't able to take care of the snow in the driveway and on the house roof so I get to play with his equipment as well as our own. I also had some youtes move into the area so I have been hunting them hard. One of my remaining hunting partners (for youtes) moved To the ND border and got a job finally in Sask in the oil fields. He told me they are importing help for the fast food joints because help for that work is impossiable to get there.
Also finally ran low on center fire, So I've been preping all the cases and loading them. The thumbler had a melt down so I had to rebuild that.
Had to melt down all the wax and post it for sale, I sold it all in about a half hour. Also had to bottle up a bunch of honey as I sold 40 pounds to two Texans and ship that.
Now spring is coming so I am getting every thing lined up for the spring build up. Hope to have 100 plus colonies going into next winter.

Guess I should have E Mailed you really.

I am lucky Kare has her own places so I get the man room alone except for all the stuff she wants to store there.
