what can I do to stop this
« on: February 25, 2009, 02:35:25 PM »
I have a model 83 454 and on recoil the loading gate opens.  It doesn't open all the way and not always the same amount.  It doesn't seem loose and actually snaps shut. Has anybody experienced this?

I am probably not the right person to answer definatively, but something is either broken or binding, as this should not happen.  Unless you are handy enough to take the gun apart, I would guess that a trip to FA is called for, unless you know of a gunsmith that can pull one apart.  The only suggestion that I might offer you to try yourself would be to remove the grips, put on the safety glasses, and thouroughly rinse the inside of the action with brake cleaner.  Use the tube on the nossle, through all of the openings that you can access.  Around the gate, into the trigger area everywhere, while working the gate.  It there is perhaps some crud or debris causing things to hang on the inside, perhaps the pressurized cleaner will dislodge it.

Tention is held on the loading gate by a spring and plunger with a screw that provides adjustable tention.  this screw may have backed out or maybe never was screwed in enough.
Take off the grip frame and you'll find this screw on the right side.  turn it in until the loading gate is slightly hard to open, that should do it.

Thank you H08 I did that and found a 3/32 allen screw under there.  The hand spring gave me a real start but got that back together thanks to the exploded view in the manual.
I'll have to go out and try it now.  Thanks again
