Where does oil produced here go?
« on: August 28, 2009, 03:40:56 AM »
I was discussing oil production and increasing it here by drilling in the US and coastal waters.  My friend replied that the oil from Alaska comes down our western coast and then heads to other countries such as Japan, all this while we import.

If that is true then maybe he is right, we would still be dependant on foreign oil while exporting our domestic production.

Any place to find answers?

That once was the case for various reasons, but the last I heard was that that is no longer true.  In any case, it is done for sound economic, or strategic reasons, such as refinery capacities and/or shipping efficiencies.

Back in the mid 70s when the Alaska pipeline was finished the west coast refineries were afraid of a glut of oil.  They got a law passed that required all Alaska oil to go to foreign ports.  None of it to American refineries.

In the early or mid 90s, Senator Ted Stevens got that changed.  Now I believe all Alaskan oil goes to west coast refineries.

I think they have already build a pipeline to take crude from the southern California to Texas for refining a few years ago.  Canada is building a natural gas pipeline via the Alaska highway to northern Canada to bring gas back to eastern Canada and northern US.  If we could extend this about 800 miles and drill in Anwar we could get a 47 year supply of natural gas for the lower 48.  Environmentalists don't tell you this.  (I work in the natural gas industry).

There is a huge amount of natural gas in the area where I live. No one is drilling for it since the price of natural gas has gone in the tank. There are a very few rigs drilling for oil is all right now.

I read this in the paper a few days ago :

Question: Why can't the government control the supply of oil like they control the amount of money?
Answer: They can print money but they can't print oil.

With the glut of natural gas currently in the lower 48, the price of gas is too low.  A pipeline from Alaska is no longer economically feasible.  We missed that window.

We are using oil to heat and produce electricity.  Very costly.

At some point natural gas is going to be used in fleet vehicles and it is already being used to produce electricity.  In Alabama 1/3 of the gas sold in the summertime is used to make electricity.  Summer is high air condition use.  Rest of the year is coal, nuclear, and hydro in that order.  90% of the electricity produced in Texas is from natural gas.  Texas has a lot of wind in west Texas, but most of the people live in east Texas.  That is why T. Boone Pickens is trying to get his windmill farms up and running in west Texas, but is having a hard time getting the power companies to build the transmission lines back to east Texas.  He had build 80-90 natural gas filling stations for vehicles.  Makes sense to use wind for power and natural gas for vehicles to stop imports.  The only drawback to natural gas is range, 100-150 miles.  However, you can fill up in 15 minutes from a compressor station.
