Scope for Savage Model 24V
« on: February 11, 2009, 09:37:52 AM »
I have a Savage with a .222 Remington on top and a 3" mag 20 gauge on the bottom.  Is there a scope for around $200 that will work on this gun?  It would have to stand up to the occasional shotgun blast and still be accurate enough for the rifle.  Would probably need see-thru mounts.  I would use the gun for coyotes and PA fall turkey.

I put a Leupold 2x Extended Eye Relief scope on my .30-30/12 Ga. M24.  It sits far enough forward that I don't need a hammer extension for cocking.  I think that a see-thru mount will put a scope too high for the existing comb.

I carry a 24 in 30-30/12 GA for ducks when I might run into a deer, and sometimes when fishing or picking berries if I might run into a brown bear.  I have a Millet red dot sight that works pretty well.  The sight was a prize at some fundraising dinner, and I have also used it on a .45 auto.  I use a leather lace-on cheek piece on the Savage.  I shot trap with the Savage in order to become accustomed to the gun and the sight.

I took the scope and see-through rings off my 222-20ga because I didn't like lifting my head up to see through the scope. A set of one piece see-through mounts might work okay, mine were on top of a weaver style base. If I put an optic back on it it would be a red dot.
Just curious Star1pup, does your 222 shoot to point of aim with the sights?  Mine seems to need a shorter rear blade (or taller front) because it shoots over top of the paper at 100yds using all the adjustment I've got.

You know, now that you mention it, I've never shot it without the scope.  It came with a cheap Tasco and then I put a Leupold V-I on it for a while.  I then put the Leupold on my '06 and the Savage has been in the safe since then without a scope.

If I were going to scope that gun the only scope I would consider is the 2 1/2 x Leupold.

Without some magnification the .222 is not really effective as a ling range rifle.  Maybe it's the worst of both worlds to have a shotgun/rifle.  I have been looking at a Nikon shotgun scope.

I have a 24V in 222 over 20 that I use for Turkey hunting. I have a Mueller 2 - 7 x 32 turkey scope on it, and like it very much. The reticle has a circle around it for shotgun aiming, and there's a illuminated dot. My one hunting buddy liked this scope so much, he bought one for himself.

One more question.  Is there any reason other than eye relief to not use a rifle scope on this gun?  I heard once that a shotgun recoil is different and would damage a rifle scope.  That 20 gauge 3" on the bottom kicks pretty hard.

I have a 22mag/20ga 24 DL with a 1.5x4.5x20 Swift with hammer spur. 4.5 22mag zero 50 yds. 1.5 (77 ft FOV) for 20 ga. Shotgun pattern is not to same poa as 22, must hold for the difference in poa when fireing shotgun. been useing that combo for many years. holds zero from year to year. very deadly squrrel combo.
