should I get a 223
« on: March 08, 2009, 04:26:09 PM »
I heard this is the place to find out info on H&R rifles. Want to get the SBS-323 the 22 in bull barrel. I've read both good and bad things bout these guns, some say they are consistently accurate and others say they are all over. So any info and/or advice would be great thanks

Youre in the right place! read the sticky on H&R basics 101 at the h&r section and read the faq and there will be some help here also.

All the H&R's i've owned have been solid performers.  Accuracy has been great.  All mfg's short of a $2000.00 custom shop will turn out firearms that need work to be accurate.

That being said, welcome to the forum and the handi basics and FAQ's should answer any questions that may arrive.  Beware though, once you buy your first handi many others will soon follow :D

Welcome to the forum Rockcrusher41! I own that same rifle that you are asking about.
It is one of the most accurate rifles that I own. As the guys have said there is a ton
of great info in the FAQ's. Once I got a quality scope, rings, and the right load combination
in my 223 bull barrel Handi it will shoot 3 shot groups under an inch at 100 yards no
problem. Once you get 1 Handi you will be addicted to them.

I just purchased a used (like new) .223 Ultra Varmint. What a fun gun to own, shoot and hunt with. the .223 ammo is cheap cheap cheap. Fortunately for me, mine likes Winchester white box FMJs. They are cheap, fly great and do very little damage to hides.

I love my H&R!

Asking a question like that here is like asking "should i get another beer" to a drunk. Buy it and give it a try. You can read the faq's if you have a problem or come to somebody here. Don't expect a benchrest rifle. That is not what you are buying. What it is is a rifle that is very capable of 2" or less @ 100 yards for a reasonable price. Much tighter groups are within reach if you take the time to make it happen.

Yes, get the .223 handi.  I have a .223 standard tapered barrel with open sights that I love.  I could scope it, but I'm having fun with it as it is.  You can set it up as a general puprose shooter like mine, or a precision scoped varmint gun.  Whatever you choose to do with it, it will no be disapointed.  Some factory triggers are smoother than others, like any factory gun.  You won't find better out of the box acuracy or general shootability for under a grand.

My old Ultra Hunter in 280 alway's gave groups in the 5/8's to 1.25" range with good hand loads. Most factory ammo gave well inside 2" normally. I don't expect the bright neon sights of my new 500 S&W to come close. The sights are too course. But it'll sure pop a pill in the bread basket I'm sure. I love the speed of acquisition it gives.

rockcrusher- if you want a 223 then owning one in a handi would be a good fix for you. I have owned a few now and all have been shooters, though I won't sugar coat it for you. You might encounter a barrel that has a few extra needs or more.
All in all it's a good caliber to own in a Handi, and a fairly reliable one too.
