Winchester 94 AE Barrel question
« on: March 19, 2009, 10:54:46 AM »
What does the chamber/barrel look like.  I bought this 94 AE a year ago and noticed that where the ejector meets with the chamber there is an odd looking cut or chip in the barrel.  My model is prior to the addittion of a saftey.  Looking at the Winchester 94 Manual for the newer model with the tang saftey I found a picture that shows this area and it looks just like mine.

I ask because two gunsmiths have said this was a pressure fracture and I needed a new Barrel.  Any help would be appreciated.

thanks.

If you mean this notch, it's where the extractor attaches to the rim of the cartridge when it's chambered and the action is closed. No brainer. I'd have big worries about a gunsmith who told you otherwise, unless it's something I'm not seeing.
(excuse the dust and dirt, they really show up in pic's  :-\

jbmi,

That notch is exctly what I was talking about and what I thought.  I have only owned two other 94s, and that was a log time ago, so I am not that familiar with their structure.  So the jaggedness of the notch made me concerned that it might be a problem.  I see by your picture that my notch looks exactly the same.

I asked the gunsmith to look at it and tell me if it was safe to shoot.  He said it was a stress fracture and needed a new barrel.  Before he could replace it, the shop I changed gunsmiths and the second one said the same thing.  I think he was just taking the word of the other one.

Thanks for the information it helps alot.

So does any one no how this notch was made.  The cut looks so jagged, yet I have seen three of these now and the notch looks identical.

Look atht the extractor and you see why the notch was milled that way.  The extractor is shaped to hold the case so the ejector will eject the case to the side, hence "Angle Eject". They are all cut that way including the one I have now and the two others I have had. I'd suggest you find a more knowledgeable pair of "gunsmiths".

I talked with the second gunsmith today and he was unaware that the AE was designed that way.  He said he needed to update his books on Winchester.  But at any rate now he knows and so do I.

I still think the notch is rather crude looking mill job.
