Anyone shootin the 100grn Hornady RN in 243win?
« on: May 06, 2008, 05:50:39 PM »
I dunnow why but I have an infatuation with using round nosed bullets whenever possible. Have any of you had any expertise with this projectile on game or even just paper?

Krochus, Never used them in 243 but when I hunted in fla & georgia I used the RN 180gr remington CL in 308 caliber. It was my favorite bullet for woods hunting. Byron

I've been using these for quite a while now. I got them originally because all the other 6mm bullets were sold out at my local reload center. It turned out to be one of the best bullets I've ever used on deer. I load them on top of H4831sc. My brotherinlaw uses H414 for his 700. Both rifle will shoot consistently 1'' or better at 100 yds. Most of my shoots stay under 100yds here in the mountains(one ridge to the other).

I've shot them at silohouttes out to 500 yds, just playing around at the range. They aren't long range bullets. They drop pretty quick.

I've not had to shoot a deer the second time with these. Not exactly bang/flop ,but bang...stagggerrr...flop! Full penetration on all victims with no recovery.

Depends on what they hit. I've had some go between ribs and come out the other side just a little oversized. Hit a rib or shoulder and OBOY!! Big hole for such a small bullet. It'll definitely let the fluids and air out of a deer.

I have run a bunch of them through an old Rem. pump in .243. They function very well and have never had a hang up.

They also have done well in my Win Mod 70 when just playing around. I had a box loaded up for each but they ended up being target fodder for the daughter. Still have a few unopened boxes of them laying around in a cabinet somewhere.

The will definately penetrate on through a deer and have done pretty well on a few hogs we tried them out on.

Good luck with your endeavers.

In a 6mm Remington, I've used Barnes 115g Round Nose on California hogs. Range was 100 yards +/- and it did the job same as an 85g Barnes TSX or any other quality 100g bullet.

For some inscrutable reason I am attracted to RN bullets, too.  After reading all of the above, I expect the same results might be expected from RNs in my 257 Roberts.

I have a box of 160 gr. RN in .264 which I will use to create a load for deer and elk over the summer.

When I was young everyone in my neck of the woods used RN bullets. Never seemed to have a problem with them. We would hear in magazines of people who had failures with the "pointy" jobs and chuckle to ourselves. This was many moons ago. Hard to find RN anymore. I like them still. Flawless and simple design.

I love them too!! the 105 Speer was also a good one, but they are gone now..

I have shot a couple dozen deer with them thru the years.. GREAT BULLET!!!

For my kind of rifle hunting, if a RN is avalible, I'll be using it!! ;D

Those 160 gr Hdy in .264 may be a bit to "soft" for the .264 Win Mag. I'd check with the Hdy lab lads to see what they recommend.

I found a older box of hornady 117grain round nose in 25 caliber.  The shoot great with most powders out my stevens 200 25.06.  All I have shot is paper so far.

I have four boxes now, this aught last me for a little while.  ::)

Hey krochus!! I've handloaded the Hornady 100 grain roundnose for about 30 years now. Have always had excellent results with it. Read my post on the .243verses25/06 debate. It's on the bottom of the second page.I sure can't complain about the success i've had with it!!!

Yea, I liked that bullet as well... I still have some of the spirzers, but prefer the RN for the hunting I do.

I've shot a lot of Hornady 117 RN bullets through various .25 caliber rifles, and I like them a lot. The last deer I took was with one of them out of a .257 Roberts, and it worked very well. High lung shot deer piled up in about 35 yards quite dead.

I have shot a bunch of deer with these bullets on depredation shoots. Full penetration and quick kills with any solid hit. No shots over 300yds so RN configuration was not an issue. I use IMR-4831 in a Tikka T3.
