Iffen it don't get no worse than a little splash just shoot it and ignore the lead and be happy. If it's happening with .430" it ain't gonna get better with .429". Unless it builds up and becomes a problem stop worrying and keep shooting.

I have read that leading in the first part of the barrel can be caused when the bullet is too hard for the pressure generated by the load. The bullet then doesn't expand up well and gas cutting from blow-by gases happens. So maybe a softer bullet might help for this loading.

You might get less leading by stepping the velocity up a notch or two. I don't know how hard those bullets are but a little more oomph might cause that flat base bullet to obturate or "slug up" and better seal the bore.

A couple of jacketed bullets at the end of your shooting session will also clean out those lead deposits.

Ken,

Do you clean all the copper fouling out of the barrel before shooting lead again,

Thanks,

Paul

HG,
Sounds like you're cooking the base a tad to much if not GC'd :-\
Years back I machined a "PollyWad" cutter to punch out coffee can lids....cork sheets....wife's prized cake flower mold strips :o
Cut down melted lead barrel splash on my 44 FA to nil ;D
Something you might wanna try?

I'm not Ken but no most of us who do this don't bother with the copper as there just isn't enough to matter.

Just shoot the darn thing and see if it's a problem at all. A tiny bit of lead after shooting cast is not a concern. ONLY if it begins to build up noticeably is it a problem. If it bothers you that bad do as Ken suggests.

Paul,
Good grief, no. In a statement that is bound to drive any of the truly anal retentive types nuts, I must say that I have never worried about "getting all the copper fouling out " of ANY handgun. I do clean a gun every time I shoot it unless I'm going to shoot it again the next day (that's the old Marine coming out in me), but whatever residual copper is left in there after routine cleaning, stays in there.

Leadhead bullets are quite hard (22-24 brinell) , and this is probably your problem. You can push them faster/harder and that will probably stop the leading in the forcing cone area. The best advice is, as others have said, don't worry about it. I bet that FA gun cleans up real easy. My 454's get a little bit of lead in them and it comes out with minimal effort.

Agree with the above. For my milder 44 loads I use the 250 gr RCBS 82080 from Montana Bullet Works air cooled to 15 BHN. Works great.
