How would you like to buy bullets?
« on: March 03, 2009, 04:35:46 PM »
Now a days buying bullets isnt so cheap. Ecspecially if you like pretty polymer tips on them. ;) I wish everything was as easy as XTP'S. 100 bullets for around $16.00 bucks. Not bad at all and yes they work on game trust me. I think Cecil at prbullet has the best way. Packages of 12 bullets. That lets you buy a variety of different weights and sizes to try in your Muzzleloader. We all know what works in one ML doesnt always work in the next. Most of the time a different sabot will correct that. I wish all bullet companies would loose the sabots. I dont trust the bullet companies on what sabot i'm getting. I learned along time ago to toss them as soon as i get them. To me 12 is the number with an option to buy in bulk when you find the right bullet for you and your Muzzleloader.

What way do you guys like?

Grouse,
I like to start out with a small pack that usually comes with a sabot (e.g XTP's, Barnes, Shockwave, SST), just to try them.  I have a good inventory of Harvester and MMP sabots now, so I can experiment, looking for the loading pressure I want.  I have a pretty good idea who makes some of the supplied sabots (Barnes are MMP's), but again the sabots may be old stock (or old formulation).. so why take a chance.  Better to buy the sabots direct and be sure of what you got

Once I find that "magic combo".... I'd rather buy only the bullets, in bulk.  Like you said, not many are offered like that.

Right now I have bulk bullets in 300gr XTP, 200gr 10mm XTP, 250gr Speer Gold Dots, and 260 Speer JHP.  Hey those are all pistol bullets... that's probably the only reason they are available in bulk.    >:(

Ideally, if they came with sabots, I would like an assortment of sabots.  It would need to come with enough bullets and sabots to test several different powder charges.  Packs of 12 or 24 would  work well for me as I like to shoot in groups of three.  Then when I found the combo that worked in my rifle, I could then buy the bullets and sabots in bulk.  As it is now, when I buy 200 gr SST/SW for my .45 cal Knight, I toss the MMP sabots and use Harvester sabots.  I wish the .40 cal SST/SW came in bulk.  Any chance they would add the .40 cal to the FTX line?

This is very similar to what some archery dealers with do with arrows.  They sell you a mix set to see what the bow shoots well and then you can buy in bulk only what you need.

I see that Harvester now sells the Scorpion PT's in bulk w/o the sabots.  These shot very well in my Omega for the 12 pk test.

I buy my bullets in bulk lead, then I mold them. I have a lee production pot and a lee 250 grain 44 caliber .429 round nose bullet mold. I mold a few hundred at a time then buy harvestor crush rib sabots and boom the deer fall fast.  They shoot well out of my sidekic, my huntsman optima elite and encore.  Much cheaper and I like molding  them.
