Finally done custom Ultra Varmint 223
« on: March 04, 2009, 12:04:14 PM »
Thought I would share my custome UV 223 project with the handi-holics. I made this stock set from Baltic Birch. I prefer thumbhole and a bigger front stock. this was my first ever attempt and I made some errors that I would have liked to have avoided but overall am very pleased with the end result. I didn't realize until I saw the pics that i left that stupid trigger lock on ???

Anyhow, the forend is bedded from the start of the stock to about 1.5 inches ahead of the barrel lug. I used Permapoxy putty as suggested by JerryKO. the stuff works great and the stock falls into the same spot every time now.

I will be shooting it tomrow morning to see how this gun reacts to the mods. may be some tweakin to do but hopefully it shoots well with the new wood on.

CW, thanks again for fetching me a bolt. I owe ya one ;D

Good looking rig.  Hope it shoots as good as it looks.  Someone asked why I would buy a single shot and why a Handi.  Then he shot it.  May have to start a Canadian chapter of Handiholics Anonymous.  Let us know how it shoots.

Do you really think you should risk sending me your Handi? ;DI am somewhat like my 5 year old daughter. Once I get a toy, I have a hard time sharing. It would be too risky that I would like the gun and have a hard time sending it back ;)

Mike, the forend screw is a standard ¼-20 threaded flathead machine screw commonly available at most well stocked hardware stores, they come in various length from ½" and up, so adding a longer screw is no problem, it could always be counter sunk too.  ;)

Mike, I had to get a longer screw. I think it is  1.5 inches and I counter sunk it into the wood a touch.

If you are making a forend, one thing that I found really helped was I placed the forend on the gun and used layers of electrical tape that were cut into 1/2 inch squares to float the barrel and position it in it's ideal spot. I then bedded the barrel with Permapoxy putty using my spacers to maintain position and proper floating. Once all this was done, I attached the spacer and shimmed it square. This way, the spacer was placed onto an already positioned and bedded barrel and attached where it best fit to allow a firm and straight connection. Saved me trying to lign it up later. I did have to shim it slightly to ensure it was snug but that was easy since it was already aligned etc...

Hope this helps.

feel free to ask any questions. The only answer I will have is what seemed to work from me. The real Handi Geniuses are the other guys on this forum.

cheers
