First Post and 45-70 question
« on: March 04, 2009, 09:57:52 AM »
Hello to everyone, this is a great forum, glad I found it.  I recently started reloading for my 45-70 Handi-rifle and loaded 45.0 grains of Reloder 7 with 300 grain JHP bullets.  My Alliant manual had the load for "modern rifles" for Reloder 7 to be 50 grs.  I backed it off 10%.  Someone told me that I should be using Trapdoor loads and the trapdoor max loads for that combination is 42 grs.  I have searched and found that the Handi-rifle can handle hotter loads than the trapdoor.  My Question is,  Do you think the handi can handle my reloads?  Thanks in advance.

The Handi-Rifle is factory chambered in 500S&W, 450 Marlin and other high pressure chamberings such as the 270 Winchester, so loading to 1895 pressures isn't a problem for the rifle, but it may be a problem for the shooter with the associated recoil!!  :o Buffalo Bore loads are safe in the Handi, they load the 300gr Speer to 2350fps.  Be sure to check out the H&R Centerfire Rifle forum here, the FAQs and Help sticky has lots of good info for you and your Handi.  ;)

Thanks Quick for the help.  My manual shows 2001 fps using 47 grs of rel-7 and 42 grs shows 1775 fps.  For what I am reading, I should be ok with my loads.  Anybody else got any opinions?

Welcome to the forum. I love the 45-70 and it is one of my favorite rifles to reload and shoot. I think you will find that recoil is the deciding factor on a shooting load. Also, I have found IMR 4198 to be a very flexible powder. In my Ruger No. 1, I usually shoot two loads with the 300 grain Sierra or Remington  - 36.0 and 50.0 grains. The 36.0 grain load is a good shooter and the 50.0 grain load is about the max I want to handle from a recoil standpoint. Both shoot to nearly the same POI at 100 yards.

RL7, 3031and IMR4198 where my powders for the 45-70. All shot great with 300 and 400/405 bullet weights.

I now only use IMR4198, no perticular reason, any listed in any post here is a good powder. 4198 is just my choice. It does everything I need with this caliber.
