accuracy and clearance

I have been pondering the thought of a 50mm objective scope with my new .204 ultra varmit. I have always been tought to keep your obj bell as close to the bbl as possible without it acctualy touching, so that is what I have always done with exception of my first .308 survivor sorry the wifes. I bought a Bushnell elite 3200 3X9X40 for the .308 without thinking as that is what I have been acustomed to buying. All my guns have 3x9x40 elite's some 3200 some 4200. Well once I sat her on there I thought oh boy lots of room to the barrel I bore sighted and was nervous of bottoming out but all went well. I want to buy a Bushnell 32 or 42 50mm obj bell for the .204 to get it closer will that actually be a plus or does it really matter. I also want to put a sunshade on it 3.5" do the sunshades work I have never used one but I think they look cool. Yes i'm quilty I want my .204 ultra to look like something out of a future weapons show even for a single shot. I used to think single shot are u nuts but I bow hunt its in my blood really last time doc drew blood they sucked out a bow and a few rage broadheads. Well with a bow you pretty much have one shot so you do everything you can to make it count. The single shot same concept make it count I think it keeps people well not all but it keeps them from rash bad judgement shots they take their time. when you slow down you will have a chance to think like not good there is a house behind the target you just slow down and take more in than there it is shoot quick dont worry you have 2, 3, 4, more shots hurry. I hope I posted in the right area. The stick and string, single shot rifles are the best way to give the animal a sporting fair chance (fair chase) people who get caught shooting deer from the road with gun out the window should loose it all. sorry for the tangent I got of on alot of different things ok its time for my meds know.

I have 4 bolt action varmint rifles - all of them were single shots to start with or have been converted to be single shots. Of course all of my Handi rifles are single shots as well. I guess you could say I like single shot rifles for much the same reasons as you.

A far as the objective bell being 50mm - Yep you have to mount them higher. I have not found that it makes that much difference. You do have to slightly adjust for more bullet elevation (adjust the scope down) to get the path of the bullet up to the line of sight. But I have not had much trouble with it. Remember most bullet drop tables list a scope 1.5" above the bore. When you mount a 50mm objective bell, this will change slightly to about 1.75" - 2" above the bore, depending on the thickness of your barrel and how high you mount it above the barrel.  IMHO. with that Bushnell scope, (better quality) I don't feel you are really going to get any actual "light gathering" advantage from the 50mm obj vs a 40mm. Looks.. that's another story, sure it will look cool!! 

 The sun shades do work. They work for heat and sun shade in bright conditions as well as the "cool looking" factor you mentioned. its certainly not going to hurt anything. If this floats your boat, go for it!!

 Mounting a scope close to the bore as possible is a good practice. Its best advantage is on long range shooting. Like LaOtto222 mentioned. If you compare the trajectories of a given caliber where the open site vs scope numbers are outlined, you will drastically see differences. Why? Because the sites are as close to the bore of that gun and a siting device can get. The other advantage is posture. You cannot get a good cheek weld and proper shooting form if you have to crane your neck up to see thru your scope.
