I really don't mean to make this a smart _ss question, but I admit that I'm a little slow when it comes to the new fangled shootin irons. Can't a person just use black powder in those things and save money over pyrodex and 777 powders? From what I read, you still have to clean after shooting them?

You are correct-a-moondo!!!! Absolutely no reason why regular B/P won't work in ANY modern muzzle loader you use today. As I said, you certainly can save some coins if you want to use black powder instead of the new substitutes. I think the biggest hurdle today is being able to find B/P without going through the hassle of ordering a case lot and getting hit with the Haz Mat chgs. too! Most local dealers won't bother carrying it any longer.
Now, if you know about a black powder shoot at a local club that is happening in your area, stop by and there should be someone there selling individual 1 lb. cans of B/P. Some clubs, like the one I belong to, will go in together and buy a lot and split it up between friends making it a reasonable deal for everyone.
As far as clean-up is concerned.....it ain't no big thing to clean up! Some say it's easier than Pyrodex! I use soap and hotwater followed up ASAP with a water absorbing lubricant such as BALLISTOL or BREAK FREE clp. When it's time to clean out the bore before firing, I place a clean patch on the jag and swab out the bore with a little Windshield washer solvent. Next, I place a second clean patch on the jag, push it down the bore and leave it there, fire off a couple primers into the patch, to clear the primer hole path, and remove the patch and rod and we're set to go for the day. No worries and you don't get into that Bore-Butter junk.
