Rem. 700P
« on: February 26, 2009, 12:20:58 PM »
I am looking for a gun for range shooting mostly, I was advised to go with the Remington model 700P in 308.  Any one got any advise, recommendations, or comments on this gun.  I have never owned a 700 but have good experience with other 22 cal rifles from varmint hunting.  Thanks for the help.

I used to own a 700P few years ago and it was a very good shooting rifle. A friend of mine let me shoot his on a few occassions and that was the reason I eventually bought mine. My first Rem. ever was the 700VS in .308 and it was a tackdriver - wish I had not sold that one!

I've read good things about those rifles.  The ones with the new X-mark triggers are more highly prized.

It's really no different from Remmys other varmint offerings other than having the black HS Precision Police stock. I saved $150.00 by getting a 700 SPS Varmint, selling the stock(which I hated) for $70.00, and bought the exact HS stock that comes on the Police models from MidwayUSA for $275.00

If interested, the stock is a HS Precision PST12(for short action 700's with a varmint contour barrel).

**The Xmark trigger had just come out and was available on the SPS varmint, whereas it wasn't on the Police models yet so the decision to take that route was an easy one.

After buying the rifle, selling the stock and buying the other stock, it cost me $800.00. Gander Mountain wanted $950'ish around the time and Dicks distributors didn't even offer it. I really didn't want to go thru gunbroker or gunsamerica so I opted to make a little project out of it....which I do not regret one bit  ;D

I was going to get the 700p but ran across a 700 5r and bought that one instead.  was a little more money but the accuracy of this 5r is everything i have read.  using 168 gr SMK's handloads at the moment and will work up some 175's later this spring.  the XMark trigger is ok.  mine came at about 6 or 7 pounds and a tick under 3 is the best i can get it.  will probably replace the trigger later this year.

I have a 700VS which is the same basic platform. It is a VERY good shooter, esp. with the 168 A-Max.

I bought a 5R a couple of years ago and couldn't be happier (after I changed out the stock).  I'd try to get your hands on one to see how it fit before I threw down the change on one.  Otherwise an SPS Varmint/Tactical with a stock swap would be more financially practical.

Sorry SniperVLS, that one got traded off after I painted it for an PST 03A.  I stippled the grip and painted that one as well before finally realizing that I was just spending too much time concentrating on my shooting hand.  Sold that one off.  Might want to check out Snipers Hide, they have had a few sell there in the past week or two.  Hope this helps.

Thanks, I'll keep my eyes open over there. I've had good luck over @ sniper chat as well, 'tis the season to buy new toys!
