The Limbsaver prefit part numbers that are a close fit are listed in the links in the FAQs in Handi/Ultra Recoil Pads, the are two or three that may fit.

you've got to be into pain,

Well now,  :-\  I do kind of like a briskly placed hairbrush now and again...  :-[  bristles down if I'm feelin real frisky!   :P  But this is entirely different!   :o  To make me feel even more like a namby-pamby, I checked the Buffalo Bore site and what I shot was only the ballistic equivalent of their 45/70 load!   :'(  I got a long way to go...  :(

Stay on the path, Grasshopper; the search for pleasure/pain is never simple.  It can be found in 700 gr. bullets and lots of powder.  I go out every day to see if your rebel butt has made a landing here yet.

...since the tube can't be opened up like a mould, will a combination the release agent and the metal shrinkage allow the lead bar to slip out of the tube?  :-\ Shoot!  I can't wait to get home and try something!!  ;D

If the plug at the one end is removable, some pushing through with a dowel or what not might work...?

As far as filling the stock with lead... I used No9 shot in a plastic zip lock bag and rolled it up and stuffed it in.
Played with the amount of shot until it fit tight and filled the hole to the recoil pad.
Does not make any noise or shift during use.

I put synthetic stocks on the '06 and the .45-70 so I could cram lots of #4 shot in there.  About 36 ounces each.  It helps a lot.
