Powders for the 45 colt, 44 special and 44 magnum revolvers
« on: March 12, 2009, 05:37:47 PM »
I have enough of the old hercules 2400  to last a spell, but I think maybe things being what they are I may want to buy a cannister or two of powder  for a rainy  day down the road a piece. Not sure what kind  As I have used 2400 almost exclusivly and I understand It has evolved into somthing a little differnt. I would be interested  to hear what  others use. I need powder that can load hot or mild in the above cartridges.

Thanks

2400 is still good for the colt and for the 44 magnum.  I use 19.7 gr. of 2400 and a 240 gr. lead bullet in my 44.  I get a measured 1337 fps (average) with that load.  I've also loaded 44 specials with 7.0 gr. Unique and a 200 grain lead bullet.  I use Unique, Accurate #5 and #7 for the colt.  If you have a contender or a Ruger, you can drive a 255 gr. lead bullet over 1000 fps with #7.  I load Unique and #5 with the same bullet for milder plinking loads.

There is not just one powder that does it all - well. You are talking light 44 Special loads to heavy 44 Mag loads with a case capacity to also cover the 45 Colt. For light loads I think that Unique can't be beat in your cases, and it will work for heavier loads, but it will not get you the best velocity with out pressures getting up there, but it can be used, you will just get a couple of hundred fps less out of your top loads. I use Unique for my light loads and W296/H110 for my heavy loads. You can not use W296/H110 for light loads. Good Luck and Good Shooting.

AA#9 will load hot loads for all 3 calibers.
Unique will loads mild loads for all 3 calibers.

Just another option to create accurate loads.....

There are alot of good powders, but over the years I have settled on 2. I use Win.-296 for all my hot loads and Bullseye for all reduced loads. I will but other powders if they are a real bargin, but normaly on stock those 2.

I load either green or blue dot for my hand guns.
I already have them on hand for the shotguns and that way I can buy in bulk.

Thanks for all the responces guys.

I plan on having a look see whats out there next week. Not sure how picked over everything might be.
I did see a can of blue dot at the local sportsman warehouse. There is a small gun/reloading shop I went too a few times many years ago. When I rang it up To my surprise it was still open. I only asked if he had cast bullets and didnt think about power at the time. Guess I ll see what he has on the shelf.
