Heavy .223 bullets
« on: May 02, 2009, 12:09:04 PM »
Can someone tell me some of the heaviest bullets available that will not separate and fragment ? I want the bullets to mushroom and expand. I would really like 75 grains or higher if possible.
Thanks

Sierra makes a 77 grain Match HP I know cuz they just shipped me 2000 of them. Why I dunno cuz I only asked for 500 each of four different bullets and they told me they could only provide me 200 of each of the four types. Then they end up shipping me 2000 of just the 77 grain. I sure hope my Remington R15s will stablilze them.

The match HP's are very lightly constructed and will come apart pretty easily.  75 and 80gr. Hornady A-Max bullets are supposed to be more heavily constructed for larger game as well as the 75 gr. Swift Sirroco's, but they're too long to be loaded to magazine length in an AR type rifle.  I've always used 68 gr match hp's - also fairly light in construction, but extremely accurate.  AR's with 1:9 twist rifling shouldn't have any problems stabilizing bullets 60gr and heavier.  Most don't tend to get finicky until you get lighter than 60 grains.

Personally, I don't think there are many options for a heavily constructed, expanding bullet in the .224 diameter.  However, my .223's are used almost exclusively on coyote sized targets, so I have no problems using the HP's.

I dont know how I missed that one.  It should perform way better on impact than the match HP's.
