Contender misfiring
« on: February 08, 2009, 06:40:03 AM »
I am have a problem with my G2 frame misfiring.  Since I have owned this frame, I have only used it with a 7GNR and thought the misfiring was because of headspace on my reloads.  So I have been trying  to fireform cases to stop the problem.  Yesterday I mounted a factory 223 barrel and it misfired with factory loads.  Never had a problem with that barrel on any other of my Contender frames.

OK, where do I start to fix this problem.  Strip it down and clean it?  Replace the firing pin?  Or what?  It does not occur ever time, but most of the time.  Not a bad test of your shooting technique.  A flinch shows up big time.  ;)

This sounds like one of the classic Contender issues to me.  Try closing the action sharply  If it gets more reliable you need to polish your locking bolts.  There are several good posts here about how to do that.  If you do a search you will find them.  You don't need to remove much, so take it easy and check often.

Turk,

By chance do you have a hammer extension on that G2.  If so, that is most likely the problem.

I have the same problem with my g2 and a 223 barrel. Might it be the spring being too weak? My 44 & 22 mags work fine though...

I doubt it's the hammer spring if 2 barrels don't do it and one does. If you put the "working" barrels back on since trying the 223 barrel, do they work still?

If so, I'm betting it's a locking lug issue on your 223 barrel. Try polishing the barrel lugs or another set of lugs off your other barrels. If the other lugs make it work, call TC and have them send you a set of locking lugs for the 223.
