Projectile for 1" bore.

This may have been mentioned some time ago but I'm going to post it anyhow, just in case.  A copper plumbing end cap makes a nice projectile for the 1" bore when the cap is filled with lead.  The outside diameter measures just about .965 but I do not have the weight which will vary depending on just how full the cap is filled.
This projectile looks VERY small when pictured along with the empty powder can but I'll follow that self imposed "rule" and get the can in the picture too so as to avoid getting severely chastised. ;D

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

Are the copper jacketed slugs more accurate than the round ballz in your Dahlgren?

Cool idea, I think I will try it.

Not sure how you are filling them. If simply pouring molten let in, it might be more consistant to drop in a few cast lead bullets and melt with propane torch right in the cap. Wax lubed cast bullets would provide wax flux to stop the lead from oxidizing.

Alright, I get it now, (I think) so your giving advance notice that you've got a 1-inch bore, brass gun in the workings, that's going to be debuted in the near future; I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Sorry, but I have never tested them for accuracy especially to compare with round ball projectiles.  I guess I'm only a very mediocre shooter as I just like to watch the dirt/back stop splatter.

I have used the RCBS bottom feed melting pot.  I'm going to try your suggestion of melting the lead right in the copper cap.  I believe there will be less chance of the lead shrinking and popping easily out of the cap since I'd rough up the interior of the cap before melting the lead in it.  Thanks!

If you tin the inside with solder before filling it with plain lead, the lead will not come out.

Hey, that's good to know - about the method of the tin with solder procedure first.  I will try that on the next batch.  Now as far as firing C Cell batteries, I just went out and measured the bore on my 1" SBR Dahlgren.  Although I do NOT have a real expensive caliper, it is an electronic one and tests very accurate with the 1" test piece.  OK, the C cell Rayovac "Alkaline Maximum" measures right at .999 and the battery is smooth sided and not bulged in any way.  The 1" bore on my Dahlgren measures right at .993,  again according to my mediocre little caliper.  Of course the battery will not fit the bore of my 1"er.  I used to have a 1" bore 6 Pounder from Kansas Cannon Works and although I never fired a C cell in it, that battery slipped in the muzzle of that one quite easily.   ???

Shouldn't be too hard to ream that out to a true inch, or even 1 1/32, by hand.  How deep is the bore?

I'm in the house for the evening (confined to the indoors) or I'd go back out and measure right now.  I'm guessing the bore is about 18 to 20" deep.  I won't be "monkeying" with reaming it out just to accommodate the C Cells.  I'll just have to stick with the lead balls and/or copper plumbing caps. Thanks though..

I must have missed something.  Why are you using the copper end caps when it would be easier to cast up round balls with your mold?  Just curious.

Has the staute of limitations ran out...I said a c cell will fit a 1 inch bore. I never said I shot one and under advice from my Attorney I refuse to answer anymore questions, invoking my rights under the 5th Amendment.   :)

I am less concerned about the environment than what the contents of a battery might do to the bore of my cannon if it leaked on the way out.

Most are marked "Dispose of Properly".  1" bore is definitely PROPER!   ;D

When I first started with beer-can caliber mortars in 1975 I was concerned about loading too.  I was firing water-filled cans.  You could increase the charge to a point where the hydraulic pressure would press the outside of the can into the sides of the bore - observable by slight scrapes on the fired can.  Further increase would rupture the can along the sides.  These charges were all MUCH less than anything I've fired with a solid projo. to include cement filled cans.

What if you could fill only part of the copper cap ? I was wondering if you could get the Foster /badmitten effect to go nose foward  ?

I was wondering if you could get the Foster/badmitten effect to go nose forward?

That should work although you probably can't fill more than a quarter of the length and still get a tail effect.  And then you have an empty volume that uses up some of the powder force.  Maybe if you put a hard sabot behind the shot it would work, but then you have to accelerate the sabot......

 What might have happened if your steel beer cans were filled with a tar-like substance, sealed and crimped tight on both ends, fit the bore with only .01" windage, and were fired from a long bbl? :o

 I think the above would be close to a scaled-up version of what you'd have when shooting a C battery out of a 1" cannon...
