Thinning a Patridge Front Sight Blade
« on: May 23, 2009, 08:10:47 AM »
I'd like a thinner front sight blade for my S&W 617.  I have a Millett rear sight with a 0.080 inch notch and was wondering how big of a job it would be to have a smith (or machine shop) shave down the sides of the front sight.  I can't seem to find any sources for either an aftermarket or factory skinny blade.  My eyes just don't do well with such a fat blade up front.  I guess I should just have a gunsmith quote me a price, but I'm not sure I'll follow through with this project anyway.  Thanks.

Also consider opening the notch in the rear to let more light pass through.  I thought just like you with my super blackhawk until my smith recommended and opened the notch.  Its much brighter and easier to see now and the larger blade is also easier to pick up.  I did have the blade on a muzzle loader thinned and that was ok too.

I never thought of that.
