Different primers , accuracy ?
« on: March 15, 2009, 03:27:24 AM »
I've been using CCI primers since I started reloading...early 70s.  Over the past several years a lot of newer manuals are listing Winchester WLP primers in their handgun loads.  Me , being the hardhead that I am...still use CCI 300 or 350s....generally speaking , I don't load to max on anything.  But I'm about to buy some primers.....should I start using the WLP in my handgun loads...(44 mag ,45 C ,etc ) Is there a difference in accuracy or ignition with the WLPs ? That I'm aware of , I've never had any problems with ignition with the CCI primers.  Thanks

I found myself having to switch form CCI pistol primer to Winchester pistol primer because of availability,so far I haven't found any noticeable differences between the two.  I'm still shooting the same load and getting the same accuracy in my 38/357 loads.

Sometimes primers make a lot of difference in accuracy.  Frequently they make a little difference and just about as frequently they make no difference at all that you can measure.

I think you will find the Winchesters shoot as well as the CCI primers and they are cheaper and easier to find. I find the biggest difference is between the Magnum primers and the regular primers, not between brands, but with in brands. I like CCI primers well enough, but I have found others that shoot as well and they are cheaper, so for the most part, I shoot other brands - mostly Remington and Winchester primers depending on the application. " IF it ain't broke, don't fix it"! I have been using CCI primers for everything I shoot, rifle, pistol and revolver. I have had no reason for concern about accuracy, dependability, or repeatability. I don't know whether Winchester, Federal,Remingto et,al. are better or worse. I have never had reason to explore.
GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!!

Thanks for the replies.    In my area , there's not much difference in price.  The only advantage that I can really see , is the WLP takes the place of both regular and magnum primers ??  That would be a plus , one less thing to stock on the shelf.  Thanks again, regards......

I`ve been loading WLP primers as long as you`ve been loading CCI`s. I do play around with alot of different primers with my rifle ammo when going for accuracy, but not much with my revolvers. For my AR ammo I use the cheapest primers I can find. When loading match grade ammo I usuall try Rem. 7 1/2 primers first and often nothing else in rounds that use small rifle primers. Every once in a while I`ll run a test on primers and it seem every powder and round are different. I have loaded some round with several different primers, standard and mag. to find them all shot the same velocity and point of aim. With other round and powders I have seen marked differences in velocity with no presure signs and still others marked differences in presure with little or no change in velocity.
