Nickel plated brass?
« on: January 20, 2009, 04:09:29 PM »
I know theoreticlly the nickel resists corrosion. Is it worth paying the extra? Are there any drawbacks? does the case hold as much powder?

Kevin, I have 20 R-P plated cases out of close to 700 brass 45-70 cases.  I mix them in with the regular brass for practicing.  Past 3 years using them: no splits - pour the same powder charge - shoot like the regulars but they do clean up quicker in the wash water and vibrator.  Never bought anymore because to me - they just don't look right in the loading tray or in the cartridge box next to the golden colored brass ones. It's only a personal thing

Johnboy;  I need some .32-20 cases for my Russian Nagant revolver.  All I can locate are R-P nickeled one from Mid-South.  You figured they'd be OK?

Nickel plated cases have never given me a problem. I know folks talk of flaking of the plating but I've never seen it on the brass I've used. I've used cases until it wore so thin you could hardly tell any was left and the cases were still just fine and the plating still didn't flake it just wore thin.

I use them in .243 Win, 30-06, 44 Rem and 45-70. The only difference I see in loading and seizing them is that it takes a bit more pressure to trim and chamfer them. I have a universal flaring tool which I prefer to use. The nickel stuff can damage the base of bullets if the mouth of the cases are not prepared.

I have 100 nickel .45-70 cases that I use for BPCR exclusively. They last really well, and I don't have to worry about getting a hot Marlin load mixed in with them!!    R Jones
