270 shooting not good, found the culprit!
« on: March 15, 2009, 12:58:12 AM »
I had made up some loads for my 270 a couple of weeks ago. Same powder and all. The thing was all over the place. After the next shot, I noticed that the crosshairs on my scope were a little cock-eyed. I had put a scope that was on my son's 270 savage. It was a simmons. I guess now that  bushnell banner will be in order. The load I'm using is 52.5 grns of IMR 4350 pushing a 130 gr. hornady 130 sp. I had put the scope from my son's rifle to keep from having to get another scope.

Get the best scope you can afford, maybe even a little better than you can afford. There is nothing worse than to pay $75 or $100 and then be unhappy with it or have it break down on you. Usually when you need it most. I am not saying which is best, but for the most part you get what you pay for. Is a $500 scope 5 times better than a $100 scope? I do not think so, but they are definitely better. Is a $300 scope better than a $100 scope; with few exceptions -  no doubt. I have several Bushnell Banners and they are good scopes, but not as good as a 3200 series scope. I think you are better off getting a better line of scope and cutting back on power and some frills to save some money than to get a cheaper line with high power and adjustable AOs and such. That is my 2 cents worth - Good Luck and Good Shooting

+1 Or you could follow the pay as much for the scope as the rifle rule. Their some exceptions though. seems like you can get lots of scope a lot less than days of old. lots of nice 150$ scopes

Those Bushnell banners are good scopes for the money.

Don't buy an expensive scope!   Buy ammo or components instead with the money you save!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

+1....Expensive scopes are a waste.  I've got Banners on everything I own and they have not let me down...ever.

Another way to look at it is why pay the same for a scope as you paid for your Handi Rifle, when you could have bought another Handi rifle instead?

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about!

There are lots of inexpensive scopes that are fine.
The old Simmons AETEC (pre MASTER SERIES), Bushnell, Redfield, along with others.
I have used the old Simmons AETECs for years on many big calibers and have never had a failure.
The old WEATHERBY scopes were another good one.
I am working now with a couple of PENTEX GAMESEEKERS from SPORTSMANS GUIDE.
They are 4x12x40 and cost $116.00 + shipping.
I have one on a 450 Marlin Handi and my buddy has one on his 308 NORMA MAG.
So far they are holding up good.
I really don't care for the extra trajectory lines but am learning to ignore them.
As for the newer LEOUPOLDs, my buddy is a LOUPOLD nut, he has had to send three back for loose cross hairs in the past year.
He says he will only buy the older ones from now on.
