??Value of a Winchester 1917 Enfield???
« on: April 18, 2009, 01:14:42 PM »
I have an old 1917 Enfield built by Winchester.  The old rifle was "sporterized" years ago and has been drilled and tapped for a scope.  The original military stock is long gone, but has a pretty nice walnut Monte Carlo stock.  The original barrel in still with it, but all of the original military gear is gone.

I have had this old rifle for 3 years, never bothered to take the scope mounts off of it.  I decided the have the rifle cleaned up and reblued so I started taking it apart.  Off came the scope mounts and low and behold it's a Winchester!  I thought that it was an Eddystone up until now!  I know that the Winchesters are more collectible than the Remingtons and Eddystones, but since this one has been  stripped, drilled and tapped, I don't know if it has any collector's value.  I would really like to know before I do anything to it.

Do any of you guy have any idea of the value?  Should I go ahead and rebarrel it, reblue it, and enjoy it?

My late dad and I made up a P-17 sporter back in the 50's.   It was my second deer rifle.   We used a Bishop stock and reblued the rifle and put a nice finish on it.  We did not checker the stock.

All it all it shot ok but it was a very heavy rifle.   I had a good scope on it and it was accurate but I am glad I sold it.

I would not work on that rifle if I were you unless you have nothing else to do.

What you end up with will just be a shiny too heavy gun.

Granted it's a heavy rifle - not much of a "toter", but it shoots fine, and surely stands out in a crowd!  I don't mind the weight which certainly keeps the recoil down a bit.

I figured that the "collector's" value was gone, and in a way I'm sorta glad because I've enjoyed it so much for the last couple of years.  I was just surprised to find out that it is a Winchester.  I'll post pics when I get it finished!
