This Morning's Crow Hunt

Went out at first light on an abandoned R/R bed and set up using an Owl and Crow fight.  Managed to get 4 of them in just over an hour.  I set myself up just to the side of my set up and the last crow I shot was about 5yds in front of me, swooping down at the owl dec!!!  Crow hunting in the winter is a blast!

Great I am going to give callen them a try also.
After I shot a fox this am I had a crow in the scope but just to
many tree limbs in the way.

I do not know what caller you have in the pic, Foxpro?? I find that crow in distress and dying crow type of sounds really bring them in. After shooting the first one lay it out with the wings outstretched. You will be amazed!!!

That is a foxpro.  I have had the dead crows go both ways for me.  They have brought more in and they have chased them off.  The other day, I shot into a group of crows with a 30-06 V-Max  on the ground.  I blew one completly apart and severed the wing on another.  That wounded Crow really brought in the black devils hover over head.  I did put the wounded Crow out of its misery with another V-max.  Its amazing what a V-Max will do to a Crow......

I got me one of them pesky crows this am.
boy the 58 grain vmax and 243 don't leave much,great big feather explosion that was fun.gotta get a few decoys.

There is no closed season here in Pa. So when I am out during the summer hunting Groundhogs I run across many. There is this one farmers field when I pull into it in the morning there must be over a hundred Crows in it. I only get one shot though. After the first shot they all fly off. I did get a double one time though. I took the head off one at about 250 yards another time. Shooting Crows is just plain fun. There was another time I was out at the range sighting in my Remington 700 SPS 243 Varmint. I was taking a break and a Crow landed out there at the 200 yard back stop. Big mistake on his part. It was like poff,just a bunch of feathers. Dale

 ;) Howdy!  Where I live there are lots of crows. I've shot a few over the years.  I got all of the Johnnie Stewart tapes on crow calling and they worked a few times.  The crows in my area get "educated" fast.  Then, the calls don't seem to work anymore.  A scout crow will investigate way outside of shotgun range and if it does not see the owl or wounded crow, the rest of the crows just don't show up.  I'm not sure if this "education" lasts forever with the crow until it dies, or if it wears off in time.  I have not tried the calls for a long time so it might be a good time to get them out again.  Where I live it is hard to grow any type of grain or seed producing crop because the crows and hogs will destroy it.  Happy Hunting!

Dalescarpentry :)I was looking over you post on crow hunting. A couple years ago, a pal and I shot some crows in March. Used shotguns and a call. Sometimes I get back there and shoot some chucks in the summer, but as I remember, crows had a season then. It was something unusual like July to March, but only on weekends. :-\Did they change this season??? I may be that way hunting turkeys this May, and if I am and crow season is open, I 'll throw in my Foxpro caller. ;)

I was mistaken about no closed season. The Crow season runs. CROWS: July 4-April 5, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday only. No limit. It is Groundhogs with no closed season. So you can shoot Crows here 9 months out of the year. ;D Dale
