Savage vs. CZ in .204
« on: April 05, 2009, 02:16:17 PM »
Well I`ve had a CZ in .204 for a few years now and it`s a real tack driver with the 32 gr. Seirra bullets. Problem is that the 32 gr. Seirra`s are to thin skinned for coyote and it do like the Hornady or Berger bullets. Yesterday I picked up a Savage mod. 11 in .204 at the Lima gun show. Put a few rounds down the tube today and it looks like it going to shoot the Hornady and Berger bullets and not care for the Seirra 32. gr. bullets. Groups not great, but I need to adjust the trigger and bed the action. Groups are good enough to hit a coyote to past 400 yrds., but that`s about it and I would reather have a 2 in. group out there than a 3 1/2 to 4 in group. Anyway, I`m happy with what I`ve seen so far.

I have the CZ 527 Varmint in .204 as well and like yours it loves the 32 gr Sierra bullets. My favorite load is 26.8 Benchmark with a 32 blitz king.

I recently ran out of both and had a box of the 39 gr Sierras to play with. I have been getting some respectable groups with 29 grs of BL(C)-2 and a 39 gr Blitz king. the 39's and 26.8 of H335 works pretty well for me too.

The 32's are definatley better for me but these two other loads usually print at around 1"MOA sometimes slightly better.

I have some 39s loaded up with Varget but I havent had a chance to try them out yet...

i think you will like the varget. my .204 shot best with varget and, even though it didn't get those gaudy velocity numbers, it put 3 shots into 0.3" regularly.

I have it on good authority that the telepromter is writing a stern letter.

You were right about the Varget. I shot them today and it wasnt a real good day for shooting-it was pretty gusty and the winds were swirling around by the 100 yd back stop. Despite the wind I managed a 0.438" five shot group with a 39 grain Blitz King over 28 grains Varget W-W fire formed neck sized cases and R-P 7-1/2 primers. This is a max load according to my manual but the cases extracted easy and there were no signs of over pressure. I didnt set my chronograph up because of the wind so I have no idea what kind of velocity I was getting.

My best 5 shot group sizes with the Benchmark and 32 grain Blitz Kings were only very slightly better than that...
