mounting a red dot scope on a Thunderhawk

I recently purchased a TC Thunderhawk in .54.  I have found scope mounts for it but I would like to install a red dot scope.  The only way it seems I may be able to do that is to remove the rear sight and mount some type of scope base that reaches between the forward scope mount and the rear screw for the rear sight.  Seems like the long way to get there but I have not been able to find anything commercially made for this application. 

Any ideas?

Why couldn't you just mount the red dot sight where you would mount a scope? The Millet red dot I have is absolutely not critical of eye relief.

Weatherman68 what kind of mounts did you get and where did you buy them?  I've been looking for some for my 50 cal Thunderhawk.

I have found scope mounts on Ebay and Gun Broker for standard scope applications.  I have a standard scope that I can put on with any of these mounts.  I wanted to move the red dot scope forward similar to a scout mount because it will make it easier to clean and the blow by won't get the bottom of the scope all hogged up.

I have seen some TC mounts that allow the scope to be removed and reattached without changing the 0 but frankly I am skeptical because the mounts only attach with one screw instead of two on each mount. I probably will wind up going to a gun smith and having him mount a scope rail forward of the breech plug which will make it easier to prime and keep the scope clean as well. I'm still looking for that GI inguenity approach.

I sort of fixed the residue getting on the scope by putting a layer of comouflage tape on it.
