Educate me on 99 Savageletter designations
« on: March 17, 2009, 09:19:11 AM »
Ok I have a bid on one But as I prused through the offerings many came up with different letter designations. What do they mean ? Which rifle would be the lightest to carry besides the feather weight ?
   H
   G
   cdl
   F
   eg
   R
   A
   E
  RS
I'm sure there are many I missed. I want one with a detchable clip, tang safety and if possible schnabble foreend.

Banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered - - Thomas Jefferson 1802

[I want one with a detchable clip, tang safety and if possible schnabble foreend.]

IIRC, All detachable magazine models are a C-DL deluxe - and will all have a tang safety and none a schnobble tip.

There are entire books/chapters devoted soley to Savage 99 model differences & variations - too much to cover here.

But, briefly:

[A] - Solid frame, 26"& 24" tapered bbls, rifle BP
("B" is takedown version, "C" is " same but solid frame 22" bbl/shotgun butt, "D"  short bbl  takedown)

[eg] - Solid frame, 22" or 24" bbl, uncheckered PG stock, schnobble

[E] - Lightweight solid frame version of takedown "F", w/tapered bbl/shotgun butt
[F] - Takedown "E"

[H] - Solid frame carbine, 20" bbl, barrel band stock, aka the M99-8

[G] - Takedown lightweight PG rifle ("K" is deluxe "G"), 24"bbl (usually), schnobble

[R] - Solid frame, large forend & grip, 22" & 24" bbls & refined sights
[RS] - Upgraded "R"

There were early and later versions with the same model letters, of some of the above models - which can add to the confusion.

Failing getting one of the definitive books, like SAVAGE & STEVENS ARMS by Jay Kimmel, a prospective purchaser would be well advised to buy any style/chambering that appeals to them - as long as it's not a "gray rat".
