Savage 24V
« on: March 13, 2009, 08:35:26 AM »
I was in my local shop last weekend and lo and behold  they had a Savage 24V in 30-30/20ga, for a very good price. I have had money stashed away just waiting for this firearm in this combo (or .357mag/20ga) to show up and not be way over priced.
I took it out today, and it shoots good. Trigger needs work, but this darn thing looks almost new. Should be just the ticket for coyotes, or deer and grouse (since the seasons overlap).
I am stoked!!  :D
BTW, we waited on hold for over 2 hours (on top of getting a busy signal for 30min) for the OSP to take my background info.

Now I just need to get the trigger broken in, and get some spire point shells loaded (and find a load she likes).

I had one just like it in my youth. I shot more big deer with it than any other gun I've owned. I loaded it with a 31141  bullet for big game and then used the 120 gr lee bullet in front of a few grains of red dot or bullseye so that they shot to the same sight setting as the big bullet, but performed like a 22 long rifle. That's one gun I regret getting rid of.

aflineman , nice find.  I have it's clone and use it the same way you will, I got one grouse with it this year.  The 30-30 over 20 gauge is kind of hard to find, lots of the 22/410 or 22/20ga, but the 30-30 is the one to find.  Beware, shooting a 20 gauge 3 inch mag will put a big hurt on you.  My trigger was so bad I thought a safety was on!  It is an easy fix to drop out the trigger and hone it off a little.  Larry

Larry,
What type of scope is that? How well does it work with the shotgun?
Thanks

It's a 2.5X Simmons shotgun scope on Burris Ultra Low (no longer made) Z rings.  It works just find with the shotgun because the Grouse are so stupid they just fly up in the closest tree and sit there.  I am old and cannot see the nice little flip up sight so I had to put some glass on it.  Larry

Larry,
Thank You. I am debating upon a 1-4 power shotgun scope. I have a 2.5 Tasco that I may stick on there for the moment though, just to see how it works for me. A few years back, I would not have even though about a scope. Now I can see where I could get some use from one. It is a pain getting old. :D

Well, looks like I'm in good company.  I just came into a 24 that is 30-30 over 20ga for what I consider to be a steal.  It's in very good condition, but I don't know how the trigger is yet, will have to find out soon.  DP

aflineman,

That's a great looking gun!  What did it cost?

aflineman , nice find. Larry

I've shot 3" mag. shot loads in my .22 mag./20 ga. and wasn't particularly bothered by it.  Now 3" turkey loads in my .30-30/12 ga. is a different story!  I won't do that again except when actually shooting at a bird.  Even slugs are really unpleasant.  Actually, the gun is going to the next gun show so that won't be a problem for long.  I'm thinking of either a .30-30/20 or .222/20.

Mine is a 24DL in 22lr and 20Ga.  But I just spoted one in 30-30 20Ga. at the Gander Mtn. Store in
Huber Heights Ohio for $329.00. My buddy is putting it on LayAway today. It is in good condition over all
and the price is about right for this gun.  The auction sites often have them priced way to high.
I really like these Savage Combos. My buddy who is getting the one at Gander Mtn. Has several in different
center fire calibers and one in .222 Rem is very accurate. He has dies for .222 and has a load that shoots 3 round groups into less than an inch at 100yds. Good luck with yours.

I just found a Stevens .22-.410, an earlier model of the 24.  The finish is poor, but the overall condition is good.  It has the Tenite stocks which are in good condition, and the bores are good.  Should I buy it for $199?

One thing I have found with my 30-30 over 20 gauge is that after about 3 30-30 shots the impact point starts moving down.  As the upper 30-30 barrel heats up and expands the cold shotgun barrel pulls it down slightly which affects the impact point.  Not a big deal at all on a hunting rifle like I use it, but something to keep in mind when sighting it in at the range.  Larry

[The finish is poor, but the overall condition is good.]

Woodchukh - I'm a little confused when you say that the finish is poor, but the Tenite stocks, bores, and overall condition are good.

What's "poor" ?

[Should I buy it for $199 ?] - I sold a pristine example last weekend for $425 at a gun show.
By "pristine", I mean the gun had zero scratches/rust/pitting, the bores were bright/shiney, a working barrel side selector, barrel bluing 98%+, intact open sights, the trigger guard still all black, all the action case coloring still bright, and w/o any visible wear except in hidden working areas like the hinge.
JMO, but they are very hard to find in prime condition, as they were generally hard-used utility guns.

$199 could be a steal, or it could be all the $$$, depending upon exactly what's going on with the particular gun in question.
Sometimes, what's apparently a minus can be actually quickly/easily and un-noticibly restored to "as-new".

The finish is almost non-existant, although there is little light pitting.  It has the original sights.  I put the gun on layaway, so I don't have it in front of me to be able to give a detailed description.  But it is definitely not in any way near the condition of the one you had.
