Need loading help and bullet and powder question?
« on: March 18, 2009, 12:46:00 PM »
I have a G2 contender and a couple weeks ago picked up a 45 cal muzzleloader barrel for it (Rifle not pistol)
It has the walnut stock and a 3x9 bushnell scope and I now have it sighted in. I started off with the tripple 7 pellets only using one with a 225 grain hp power belt. Now to the problem, first load works fine, second load is harder but will go with some effort. third is a no go. Have to remove nipple swob with bore cleaner and then a dry patch and then reinstall nipple and then loads fine, second is harder, third no go back to cleaning. This is not going to work hunting for sure. I was wondering about using round balls would they be easier to load with a lubed patch, I know from the paper work that tripple 7 pellets are not to be used with round ball. So my question is what size round ball how thick of patch and what loose powder and how much or is there a better bullet that will fix the problem. I have the same problem with my 50 cal. thiump but it is after the third shot that it becomes hard.

I would switch to BH209 and find a bullet sabot combination that works good in your 45cal Muzzleloader. BH209 will be clean shot after shot, so no swabbing between shots will be needed. Your Muzzleloaders will load consistent all the time.

I am not totally sure I understand everything you have wrote but it is a simple problem to solve if you run a barely damp patch after each shot.  Should not have to remove the nipple at all.
you can use the old spit patch idea or make some pre-moistened patches as I do.  If you make them right you do not even have to run a dry patch.  They really do not need to be wet - just barely moist.  The best thing I have found for T7 is regular windex, works great to clean the barrel with after shooting also, at least till you get a chance to clean completely...

Here is story pic of how I make my patches

While round balls can be shot for plinking in inline muzzleloaders, forget them for hunting...

I have 2 custom flintlocks and a barrel made for round balls has a slower twist and deeper rifling than modern inlines...

You need to find the proper combination of bullet and sabot for best loading and grouping...
T/Cs are known to have tighter bores than say a Knight...You might try some Crush Rib sabots...

With inlines plan to clean between shots, forget having to take a 2nd shot...I can shoot multiple shots with my flinters but it's because I load the 1st shot with a .018 patch and the 2nd with a .015 patch...

When sighting in an inline I run 2-3 damp patches (both sides) with rubbing alcohol, then a dry patch followed by a slightly oiled patch and another clean, dry patch before I load...

When hunting these supplies can be carried in a zip lock bag and within 3-4 minutes you are ready to shoot again...

PowerBelts aren't the best bullet for hunting...There are better bullets that do more damage with reliable exits once they get to a deer and they don't have the ballistic coefficient to shoot as flat as say a SST...

Finally...Go to 2 pellets...Or better yet, go to a granular powder so you can measure each shot because with muzzleloading you are handloading each shot...To find the most accurate load, granular is the way to go, it's also cheaper...I prefer real black powder (Goex FFF) pr Pyrodex R-S...Anywhere from 80-120grs is plenty for deer hunting...

I was using mean green to clean with but I came across a bottle of CVA sabot bore cleaner and it seems to work great.
Keep the info coming I am told there is a lot of differance in the colors of the sabot mine are black but am told that yellow are better.any one tried the true 50 cal. copper hollow points that Hornaday has that require no sabots or lube?

The Idea of a Muzzle loader is make the first shot count. If you were to need a second shot you said it loads fine. If you need more that 2 shots whip out a patch and swab the bore and give the deer/what ever a chance to lay up a bit.
I fully agree with the windex and you can't beat the price compaired to any thing that says muzzle loader/black powder cleaner.
Pratiace at the range by swabing between shots for best results in the field.
