Onions in the ground!

The weather has been so good lately and I finally got a day off so I was able to work up one of my raised beds, add some sand, some fertilizer, some lime and a bag of onion sets.  Having something in the ground kind of makes it official that spring is on the way.  Now to put lettuce in the rest of the bed and start on some more beds.  It sure is good to get out and get my hands dirty.

After buying a bag of onions a few weeks ago, I decided this year to jump on board with some onions in the victory garden.  Bought a few bunches and have them going and they are looking real good.  Cant wait until I can start pulling a few up in May!  I was thinking about putting a couple of more bunches of sets out if it aint too late.

The local stores were all out of lettuce seed so I had to drive about 40 miles to visit walley world to get some seed.  I got black seeded Simpson and some Romain.  The Simpson is an old standby but I haven't tried the other before.  It didn't seem that Wall Mart had much verity in seeds this year.  What about the stores near you?

I bought seeds at my Walmart along with my onion sets a couple weeks ago. They must of had every veggie you could think of there. They also had like maybe 75 packs of each for really a total of thousands of packages of seeds. It took a section up that was 6' tall and about 12 long. Dale

I am still a 6 weeks off from actualy being able to plant my garden. It got down to 20 degrees last night. Dale

I feel for you fellows up in the tundra area.   The temperate here in Missouri has been average to 20 degrees over the average for quite a while.  While I will take the nice weather as long as mother nature gives it to us I am a little bit leary of it.  Two years ago we had a spring like this and everything started budding out a month or so before normal and then we had about three or so days of 20 degree weather and it froze all the buds off.  We had no grapes, apples, peaches and such that year.  What was probably worse was that we lost all the white oak acorns for that year and all the red oak acorns for the next year.  Also all the soft mast was lost.  Squirrel numbers crashed and it was hard on the deer and turkeys.  Everything I have in the garden now can stand a lot of cold but I am just crossing my fingers about the trees.

Well I just came in from planting my onions. I planted about 100 sweet yellow and red onions. This is my first time I have planted onion sets. I just stuck them in the ground about 4 inches apart and about 2 or 3 inches deep. I hope they do well. I use onions in everything but ice cream. Dale
