Rcbs small base dies
« on: March 22, 2009, 05:14:30 AM »
These dies are supposed to set the shoulder back slightly more and size the body smaller for use in semi auto, pump and lever guns.   I am thinking of trying a set for loading my 223 ultra varmint,  I have polished the chamber a few times, but still get stuck cases after my brass has been loaded two or three times.   I have never had a stuck case with factory ammo or the first time loading new brass, so im thinking these dies might be the awnser, and i dont think accuracy will go away, because my gun shoots the same groups with new brass and older brass.   Has anybody tried these dies?

I have used them for a pump 30-06, but not for a Handi. Not meaning to offend , but you are trimmimg the cases ,aren't you.????  I have a 30-30 that if the cases were not trimmed they would stick.    hth   Doug

Until I got a Handi, I didn't full lenght size, after getting a handi I started full length resizing and had the same problems as you. I started watching closer and making sure the shell holder actually touched the die hard. I learned that I was not pushing the shoulder back only bumping it. After I truly full length sized them I hadno more issues.

And I thought about the small base dies too, until I figured out I wasn't sizing enough.

I'd tune the ejector per the FAQs before I invested in new a new die, polishing the chamber is just part of the fix for sticking brass other than the usual suspects, dirty/oily chamber or brass and loads that are too hot or haven't been fully resized so it fits flush to the chamber face before reloading as Billy mentioned.  ;)
