Gamo Whisper Bench rest results
« on: April 12, 2009, 04:40:44 PM »
I finally did some serious bench rest shooting with my new Gamo Whisper. I used a Caldwell "Rock" rifle rest and a sand bag for the rear of the rifle. All shooting was at 20 yards. The most accurate pellet used was the Crossman Premier hollow point, 5 shot group of 1 inch. The next most accurate was the Beeman Model 1222 gold coat hollow point, 5 shot group on 1.5 inches. The next two pellet types were at 3 inches, RWS pointed and Crossman pointed. Pellet brand and type does make a big difference in my rifle. It came with a Gamo 3-9X scope which i used on 4X. FWIIW

I have some varmints on my hit list, Their days are numbered.

So what are you waiting for?...time to put some blood on black-speckled feathers.  Send in a picture of your first "kill".    Its good to know what your gun is capable of and where it impacts when chasing vermin.

Are we talking a .177" here?

I don't think I've ever actually set down at a bench and shot mine for groups. I routinely use it to take cowbirds and grackles from my rocking chair on the front porch. Rest is whatever the shot presentation allows from fully free hand to very solid resting on the rail of the porch. Distances normally run from as close as five yards out to as much as 30 yards.

I've noticed that if I am steady and make a good shot the bird is usually hit and when I know I made a bad shot they fly away. My flinches are again with me and are ruining a lot of shots for me. I stopped skeet shooting again last year because the flinches had returned so badly I was doing really bad things and shooting horribly. Often I couldn't even make my finger pull the trigger before the clay hit the ground.

I was hoping the lay off and shooting the air rifle would make them go away again but it looks like this time the flinches ain't going away.

I forgot to mention it is .177. I guess i should be pleased with 1 inch at 20 yards, considering the trigger seems to have nearly an inch of creep. My old Daisy Red Ryder had a better trigger pull. This air gun has lots of power. Probably should not  mention the varmints I am targeting since they my be out of season, but they raise heck with my garden and some put holes in my garage. I have hunted with an air gun since I was a child and still enjoy it.

Yeah the trigger on mine is pretty horrible and doesn't help with my flinches. Still when I do my part it will do its part. It's minute of cowbird accurate to at least 30-35 yards.

Here's what some report is an excellent aftermarket trigger for Gamo rifles.

I had one Gamo and have shot a few others. Other than the horrible trigger they seemed to be decent guns.

I am wondering how quiet this "whisper" is. What would you compare it to. I heard a guy dryfire one one time (I know not advised) and it was pretty loud but I realize it will be quiter when there is a pellet inside. Would like to have some backyard target practice and  also there are a few other things I would like to accomplish in my flower beds.

The Whisper is quieter, not a lot quieter.
