   Hello all. Ok,give me your opinions on a Franchi M.48 AL auto shotgun.I just bought one at a gun-show for a very reasonable price. Thanks for your replies.  Kix

   I've owned 2 AL48's in the past, one 12ga and one 20ga. I had them for about 2 years, shot them alot, then sold them as a pair.  They are basically an aluminum receiver A-5 (Browning) with the same recoil action. The lighter receiver made the 12ga a real "kicker" with anything but "low base" shells, but the 20ga was a great bird gun; however, it was easy to "overswing" on "pass shots" because of its "ultra" light weight.
   I never had a malfunction with either gauge, even with reloads. I would buy another in a 20ga at a reasonable price, but I'd pay extra for one in a "28".
   I think you'll like your purchase.

   Thanks Jager for your reply. My Franchi is a 12 gauge that at some point the owner installed a '50's Cutts Compensator. Ugly as the devil but it does reduce recoil and the gun functions well. Why I bought the thing I don't know but maybe I can explain: You go to gun shows and everything you desire is $800 or more and then I see this shotgun for $120 and why walk out empty-handed? Like I really needed another shotgun! LOL.  Kix

I don't own a 48AL, but if I found one in decent condition for $120 I WOULD own one real quick - whether I "needed" it or not!  Good find.

I got one last year, and used it all of last season on quail.  It is a dream to carry, 20ga is what I have, I think it is just over 5 lbs.  I shoot it better than my shotguns and had a great quail season this last year.  Two thinks I noticed, the first was getting the magazine tube unloaded.  It was accually loaded when I bought it guess the previous owner had some issues as well.  It really is not that hard to do, just a little different.  Second, they require a bit more cleaning than other auto shotguns I have had to stay running.  Most conditions will not get them as dirty as the way I was hunting when I had trouble.  We drove a gator around and everything was covered in the dirt we stirred up.

My grandfather hunted with one for years.  Me and all my friends bought them in the 80's for chuckar hunting in Nevada where an extra pound means alot.  Only malfuction is when you use light loads and don't keep the tube the barrel slides on clean and oiled, just like a Browning.
Some people switch around the rings for different loads, but AA's and hotter I have never had a problem and I have put many cases through it.
I was sold when I read that some outfitters in Argentina supplied them for dove shooting.
