first spring bird
« on: April 18, 2009, 04:05:55 PM »
Got my first Spring bird today. This was only my 2nd outing in the spring by myself and only my 4th over all. I hunted a couple of times with family 2 years ago and none last year. Wednesday was my first outing in the spring alone. It was an exciting day that got me hooked. I called a gobbler off the roost. He strutted and danced for about 100yds. He hung up at about 65yds out and some near by roosted hens flew down and he ran off with them. I got on another bird later that day but couldn't make it happen. So today I got to get back in the woods.  Heard him Gobble first at 9:23 this morning. I worked my way off the mountain to him and set up at about 10am. I made a call to locate him and he let a gobble that let me know he was close. I first got a sighting on him I thought he was alone. But shortly after I started calling I heard another hen very close to me . She ended up walking by me at about 15 yards and never saw me. Then she started off the ridge. The Gobbler strutted out to about 50yds and started away from me the way the hen went. I made one more low call and he came right in I shot him at 35yds with my mossy 835. I don't know what took me so long to get into spring gobbler hunting but man it's awesome. Can't wait to get back to the woods.

Congrats. I got my first last fall. with a bow. For the last week Ive been watching a flock with 2 monster toms & 3 or 4 jakes. The season starts in a couple days for me. This morning I had a tom gobbling at me. I was standing in the back door in myh robe smoking a cigerette. I could hear some hens clucking & chirping inthe woods behind the house. So I grabbed a slate call & did a couple clucks ( I think). A tom let loose a big ole gobble. The flock comes thru my property every couple days or so . So it should work out as long as work doesnt get in the way :(
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting
