First Woodchuck of the season
« on: March 21, 2009, 12:49:35 PM »
I got my first woodchuck of the season today. Shot with a 221 Fireball -short range. She was making a home under my porch. That is a bad place to do it around here.

50 grain Mid South Varmint Nightmare over 17.0 grains of RL 7 and a Remington 7 1/2 primer

I like single shot rifles - of any make. I like this particular rifle because it is light weight and is accurate to boot. I got the stock and fore end through Boyd's gun stocks. I am not sure if they still make them or not. I really like them too. I have fully floated the fore end. It only touches at the two screw studs - not even the frame.

A few chucks are starting to come out here in VT also. Have seen a few road kills. Can't wait to get the crosshairs on one with my T/C Custom 22k Hornet carbine. My son shot one with it last fall when I got the barrel. So far all I've shot with it is ragged holes in targets.
GOOD SHOOTING.

LaO,

Nice set up......Reminds me of my .223 Contender.....that...Oh yeah...that I use every year to whack the snot out of groundhogs!!!! I'm exceptionally jealous that you beat me to the "punch" and got one already!!! But like the others have said, I too have seen them out now. And it's my own fault that I haven't whacked one already.

BTW...how is the accuracy of those VARMINT NIGHTMARE EXTREME Bullets?  http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=0000422455VNE500  What kind of groups are you getting at 100 yards and what powder have you settled on?

I haven't really load developed. I loaded up the 50 grain Mid South over 17 grains of RL 7 and I loaded them up into the lands. I have not even run them over a chronograph yet. I am estimating I am getting some where between 2800 - 2900 fps, but the proof is the chronograph. I was getting around 1" or a little under 5 shot groups at 100 yards with it. I wanted to get it ready for chuck season and I am running out of time. I also had to sight in a remounted scope. I just measured where the bullet had to be to touch the lands and then loaded up 50. I used them to sight in with. I have not really settled into a load really - just what I threw together. It might do better at 17.5 or at 16.5, just have not had a chance to try different loads out or it might do better off the lands. I do like RL 7 for the 221 Fireball. It seems to perform well in all of my Fireballs. IMR 4198 seems to do as well if not better than RL 7 as far as accuracy, but it will not get as high of velocity. 2900 fps is a pretty hot load with a 50 grain bullet using IMR 4198. I think it does slightly better with 50 grain V-Max bullets, but I do not feel that the Varmint Nightmares are much of a handicap.

BTW I do not make loads for my T/C heavy. I like to neck size only and If I load heavy I have to push back the shoulder a little each time. For my Remington 700 (26") and Stevens 200 (18"), I load a little warmer. I like 18 - 18.5 grains of RL 7 for those rifles.

Dave - I sure wish that Mid South would get some more of these in stock. I bought 1000 of the 50 grain bullets and 500 of the 34 grain bullets. I am really starting to like the 34 grain bullets for my 22 Hornets and I am down to a couple of hundred now. I really do not think they shoot a whole lot better than other bullets but they seem to hold their own. I really, really like their price. I bought the 50 grain bullets for under $35/500 and I think I paid $36/500 for the 34 grain bullets. They have went up in price like all reloading components, but they are still the best bargain out there, that I have found.
