should i trade my s&w???
« on: January 27, 2009, 04:16:37 PM »
i have a s&w 36-1 in 38 spl, it has a pinned 3inch barrel and square butt. my friend has offered me a choice of either a new charter arms undercover and $100, or a like new taurus 65 and $100 dollars. he says he wants it for collecting not useing cause the older smiths won't handle +p and useing them will hurt value. the dealer where i got the gun said it was made before 1982, thats when they stopped making pinned barrels. but he said it would handle +p in limited use, its really a nice gun about 90% in blueing and lock up is good. should i trade? i like really like the smith, but could use the money however i won't trade and end up without a good protection gun. thank you all for any help, i don't know anything about taurus or charter.

He's trying to take you.  First, the Model 36-1 will handle +P ammo.  Any .38 Special S&Ws model-marked will.  Second, yours does have collector value.  I really don't know how much, but more than either option you listed plus $100.  And you can shoot it all day long.  If you do beat it up, it can be rebuilt (and it would be worth doing so).  Clean it appropriately and it will do the job for your grandkids.

Keep the Model 36-1.  They don't make those anymore and they're a fine revolver.

No do not let him take you and I'd reevaluate the relationship you are calling friendship. Friends don't screw over friends. If he just has to have it as a collector piece and you are willing to part with it tell him to buy you a new S&W 36 like it to replace it or whatever other J-frame S&W you prefer that isn't a collector's item. If he balks tell him you'll just hold onto it.

Do not trade the S&W for any Taurus or Charter Arms and tell your buddy to buzz off.

Also, what the hay is it with this +P nonsense.  Forget +Ps and use standard pressure rounds with semi wadcutter slugs instead, they work just as well.  And if you reload you can always go to a heavier bullet at standard pressure and they work even better.  The only bullet you can count on to do just what it is supposed to do - penetrate and not deform - is a hard cast swc slug at standard velocities.  jmtcw.  Mikey.

IMO, Charter and Taurus are junk. I wouldn't trade anything for either of them.

I don't believe in trading or selling anything. I hear too many stories of seller's remorse. This looks like a prime candidate.

As HogSniper put it NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IN H^$#. Theres not a Charter Arms or Taurus out there worth trading your S&W for. Hang on to it if for no other reason than an investment. They Honestly don't make them like that anymore.

saw one like you describe sorta , a mod. 38 airweight at a show 90% + . it was a mod 38 not 38-1 or other . price was $375.00 . Had Hogue grips . yours in the 26 edition of the blue book is listed at $ 200.00 for 90% . in 100% $ 325.00 .
Your gun will rise in value the others most likely will not , at least not as much . the 28 edition of the blue book is out and prices should be a little higher not alot but some.
On price alone the Charter would look fair until you check the price of a new S&W . And realize after you buy and shoot the new gun the value has dropped to used gun price .
Keep your S&W unless you have to sacrifice it for cash ( been there ) . If so you could get more .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
