.270win winchester ppp vs rem Scirocco
« on: September 08, 2003, 05:59:53 PM »
I was checking out the local wally world a few weeks back when something caught my eye. They had Winchester Supreme Power Point Plus in .270 for 6 bucks a box! I cleaned out their supply (6 boxes) and also picked up 2 boxes of Remington Scirocco in .270 for 14 bucks a box (which is pretty good deal in itself)

Now here is the question. The winchester ammo fires out at 3150fps, while the remington at 3060fps. Most of my shots will be at a relatively close range, (< 150 yards), most likely 50yards or less however (hunint white tail). Is the scirocco just going to fly through these guys at this range? Are they even going to hold together? Is the winchester going to be more effective at these short ranges?

What do you guys think?

While both will work well for your hunting needs I personally(opinion) cannot see the need for a bonded bullet on whitetails.  Yes, there's nothing wrong with them but I feel they are unneccesary and too expensive.  Since you have them, use whichever load you feel most comfortable with.  The Winchester PPPs will do just fine and I doubt you'll see any huge difference on the deer you take.  Good luck and good hunting.

On shots at close range, especially well under 100 yards (like 50 yards that you mentioned), most conventional bullets will "blow-up," especially when they come in contact with bones that carry more mass than just the rib cage.  As a result, I like to use bonded bullets because they hold-up under the severe velocity and impact and thus do not have the jacket and core separate.  Also, the lighter the bullet, the more important it is to be worried about bullet blow-up.

At 100 and over, and shooting at whitetails at .270 Winchester velocities, the need for bonded bullets becomes less important.  But still, why are worried about the few extra bucks?  It's money well worth spent.  Consider it insurance.

Between the two, I definately advocate the use of the Sciroccos.

Either .270 bullet put where it counts will put the lights out on any whitetail on earth at any range under 400 yards. The only difference might be if you want a larger exit hole for a better blood trail to follow in case the deer runs after the hit. In that case the bonded Scirocco is a slightly better choice. I would be much more concerned with knowing the exact trajectory each of those bullets will take and sighting in your gun with the new ammo accurately so you can precisely place the bullet where it counts. That is by far more important than any difference in bullet performance on a whitetail at .270 velocities under 150 yards. If your .270 shoots anything like mine, the trajectory difference under 150 yards will be insignificant as well, but it could be slightly different depending on your particular gun.

Happy whitetail hunting! 8)

Alright, the Scirocco it is. Hopefully they shoot as well as the winchesters, which shoot under moa @ 100 with my tikka stainless laminate...gee whiz, that trigger is great. Such a contrast from the mini-30
