is the brass on the left shorter than the others, or just a result of photography?

It's shorter so it can be crimped and still cycle with the longer pointy bullet.  ;)

That one on the right looks like it has a bit of a wrinkle in it.  Maybe you had the die set for the LE brass and had another brand in the press?

Nope its not wrinkled. It is an older case that has the cannuler that runs around the case.

WHoa....I had Thompson Center on my brain, and thought you did a conversion to a "TC" frame.  I know I'm not the only one.

Looks good!  Beaut of a knife there.

HA!!  I was thinking the same thing!  I saw the photo and asked myself, "OK, very nice....now where is that Thompson frame?"  (Oh yeah, TC...Target Classic!)

Looks great nonetheless!  I like the knife handle....nice touch!

Question, do you have any problems chambering that 500 Hoch?  It looks as if the ogive is a little high on the bullet and I recently ran into a problem chambering bullets with a higher ogive and those that are near .452-4 inches near the chamber mouth.  They end up jamming into the lands and cannot be fully chambered.  I guess this is the classic "throating" issue that so many of you have talked about on other threads???

Anyway, nice rifle and knife rig!

I have no trouble chambering the 500gr Hoch.Maybe I just got lucky or its possible the barrel has been throated.I cant wait for my other brass to get here.At the moment I only have 15 rds of brass and I;ve got another 100 on the way.Anybody wanna recomend any loads for me to try?

I've been using IMR-4198 and IMR-3031 and have had some decent results with them.  However, I'm still pretty new to the BC and the 45-70.  I've found that some rounds need a polyester wad added and some don't...and the added fill in the cartridge does vary in the accuracy you get.  For example, a load with "X" gains of a powder without the wad might shoot moderately well, but add the wad and it shoots very well.....or visa versa.  I have found that there is a lot of tinkering to do with this round and I haven't quite found the perfect load yet.  You might ask some of the 45-70 veterans here for loads:  Tim (quickdtoo), Petemi, AtlLaw to name a few.

Good luck with your rifle and enjoy!

I've used quite a lot of 5744 from 25 to 40 grains depending on bullet weights. Have been happy with results. Accurate has a lot of published data on the 5744 powder. Kurt

Jon,
Quick question:  What did you do with the 38-55 barrel from your Target Classic?

OK, so you're keeping it then.  (Geez, I feel like a vulture....but if I didn't ask, someone else would have)

You'll like that barrel.  I really enjoy my 38-55.  It's accurate, fun to shoot, and easy on the shoulder.  You sort of get the fun of an old big bore caliber like the 45-70 (both in loading it and shooting it) but you can shoot it all day long and then some.

Yes I will be keeping the 38-55 barrel as it is one of the calibers I am quite fond of.Along with the 30-30,32-40,40-65,and 32-20 just to name a few.  ;D
