.357 or.358
« on: March 28, 2009, 11:30:00 AM »
I have been doing a little thinking (since it is raining again this weekend  >:(  >:() and need some advice. I was thinking that I wanted to get a .357 barrel and have it rechambered to .358 winchester. I even have a post on WTB for one.

I am starting to think I should stick with the .357 once I find a barrel. I have read a lot of post about what a fine deer rifle the .357 makes just by using some home cooking as far as loads go. I also have some concern about the twist rate in the .357 barrel and what I might need from the .358.

If anybody has any opinions or advice it would be appreciated.

It's been discussed numerous times, but I don't remember any being done, I had my 357Max barrel rechambered to 35 Remington, it works fine with 240gr cast bullets at 100yds, I don't know how it would do with heavy spitzers tho, my RMEF Whelen Ultra shoots 250gr spitzers extremely well at 100yds with its slightly faster 1:16" twist. You might just want to wait for a new 35 Whelen barrel later this year, 357mag barrels have been out of stock for quite a while now, so you probably can't get one anyway, there are lots of frames there right now waiting for them.  :-\
